beatmangler443 posted it another Cakewalk thread. Apparently referring to it in Cakewalk threads is kind of his "thing."trimph1 wrote:Source please.beatmangler443 wrote:So cakewalk are copying presonus studio one so far? Here's the link to the KVR post (which has the source link): http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 0#p6147840
My response to the quote is in the post below that one, but in short the CTO's reasoning skills in the statement leave a lot to be desired.

C'mon, really? Studio One is my primary host and I love it. But what is Cakewalk copying directly? Studio One also copied features from other hosts. What host hasn't copied off of other hosts? When the users of a host request a feature, should they not implement it because somebody else already has it?beatmangler443 wrote:So cakewalk are copying presonus studio one so far? I think Sonar is on an excellent pace right now, and they have greatly optimized it in the last several updates. I was surprised how much it has improved since X1, which was the last time I had really put some attention on it.
Not that is is perfect, or that they aren't taking a page from the Presonus book on some things, but it's not like they are blatantly making a Studio One copy. Unless I'm misunderstanding, I think your criticism is unfair. You really don't want to go down the route of who copied who, because Studio One would also be as guilty as Sonar.

The most interesting thing in the reaction to that interview comment is how most people completely ignored the guy directly saying they got "scared" about what Logic was doing. In other words, not being so egotistical or self-centered to only apply that general theory to others, but also to themselves... which exhibits some degree of fairness and honesty...

When was the last time (if ever) you heard any daw developer say another product "scared" them? So, overall, I think the comments had good balance... but some Sonar fans over-reacted to the other sentence. When Logic 8 or 9 was introduced, the window layout changed. It was one or two years before the first Studio One version, and we got scared because this Logic version looked pretty close to what we planned to do.

Believe it or not it happened, and it was so woefully trite its hilarious : 'then X1 came out and it used the same colours.'trimph1 wrote:Source please.beatmangler443 wrote:So cakewalk are copying presonus studio one so far? No joke; it was that inane.
(and was followed up by 'then Apple did stuff to Logic that we were going to do so, but before we could, so they must have known and copied us first')

Except that Sonar's lineage is one of the original DAWs and predates Studio clOne by a few decades.koolkeys wrote:You really don't want to go down the route of who copied who, because Studio One would also be as guilty as Sonar.

You forgot the last bit, though, which changes the context of what they were 'scared' of somewhat.LawrenceF wrote:The most interesting thing in the reaction to that interview comment is how most people completely ignored the guy directly saying they got "scared" about what Logic was doing. which just extended the idea of 'we invented stuff that somehow everyone else is copying'.As if they had peeped through our window...

Aaahhh...so that was the post.
Well, one can only do so much with design of the studio DAW. Just take a look at the mixing desk.
I guess infinite regress is the answer.

Dont be silly. Every feature in S1 was completely new and original to any DAW ever.cryophonik wrote:Except that Sonar's lineage is one of the original DAWs and predates Studio clOne by a few decades.koolkeys wrote:You really don't want to go down the route of who copied who, because Studio One would also be as guilty as Sonar.
And the fact it looked just like Project5 was pure coincidence.

"Sonar has the same colors? They stole it from us because they're jealous!"
"S1 similarities to already released Logic? Those were just 'logical and evident' design choices that any reasonable DAW would make."
Not exactly what I'd called balanced reasoning. Maybe S1 looked in the windows of Sonar's color design team?

Absolutely, but Cakewalk is far from the same as it used to be. It has been completely rebuilt multiple times, particularly going from the Pro Audio days to the Sonar days, and then again going to the X1 days(wasn't a complete rebuild, but the workflow was largely overhauled). So along the way, they drew ideas from other hosts that had worked.cryophonik wrote:Except that Sonar's lineage is one of the original DAWs and predates Studio clOne by a few decades.koolkeys wrote:You really don't want to go down the route of who copied who, because Studio One would also be as guilty as Sonar.
Sonar has done it, Studio One has done it, Reaper has done it, Cubase, Logic, etc. Nothing new under the sun, is really my main point.
Both Sonar and Studio One also have plenty that is unique to each one as well. And both are great(I've used Sonar more over the years than any other host, but Studio One has been my main host for the past 3 or so years- love them both).

I wouldn't say they are copying S1 - more like catching up to every other DAW...to me these features are nice, but not particularly innovative - they're common, in different forms, elsewhere. I think the smarter move was to lower (!) their renewal price - Sonar's main strength is that it's quite a good value.

Well, you know that Apple once lowered the price to purchase Logic. Sonar can't do ANYTHING original!vespesian wrote:beatmangler443 wrote:So cakewalk are copying presonus studio one so far? Their CTO and head developer already called you out on in it two or three years ago.
