The overall sensibility of the track is way more jazz than metel. Reminds me a bit of some of the Beck fusion stuff, (Esp with that one bass player guy...was it Tim Bogert?),or something, which is fine, but not really approproate.

It's in the composition and the way that the instruments react to each otehr. I suspect that the jazz vocabulary is very ingrained in you and you have difficulty putting it aside when trying other genres...but we'll see.

Which is to say that metel has a different vocabulary of licks and interactions...it's not so much the sounds people use as these interactions that make it metel.

....as this month proves, distorted guitars and big drums have very little to do with the actual sound of the genre...much like the sound of a voice doesn't make speech sound English...it's the language and the conventions therof that matter

Good point about the kinds of interactions which I have heard in metal stuff and I have to admit that they do nothing for me. I have no metal in me and Jazz is always un my head so there it is.

I am starting to think that the differences between those of us who appreciate Toto and those who do not is maybe that those who do like them are usually live-gig musicians. Am I right?

This is in no way a put-down or delineation between live performers and studio guys, I have just noticed this over the years.

Guitar Jeff is also a live performer and almost all the other working hacks I know seem to have positive comments - in general - about Toto

You could be right to a degree there. Those who do play live regularly would realize how hard it is to pull off what they do seeming effortlessly.

My feeling is that there is also the anti- commercial thing going on here. Some people perceive that music that is really well played and produced must be some sort of "sell out" or be aimed only at commercial success. Or doesn't have any soul (HOGWASH to that!!)

Some of the backlash is also instrument-envy I imagine.

That's a valid hypothesis. I'd say it holds true for me as I don't play live at all. Nor would I rate myself as much of a musician. It wouldn't help my case much to admit I sometimes have trouble tuning a guitar (I think that was an earlier qualifier). But I can't tune a piano, drums or violin either. I listen, and I've got little to gain by being dishonest with my opinions - so I hope that's good enough.

This is the strangest thread. Imagine if we'd picked any other band of that ilk - I'll hazard to say Journey, Foreigner, Survivor - I don't know... I wonder if the debate would have heated up as much.

Everyone likes different things, so disliking these bands is certainly just as valid as loving them like I do. Different strokes.

Yes I do like Survivor a lot, but they are from Chicago, not Canada! "Vital Signs" and "When Seconds Count" are always high in my driving music rotation.

I assume Tak has all kinds of sponsorship deals, and therefore all the luscious axes he could ever dream of..

Jeez - I hate to be a name dropper, but as far as 38 Special is concerned, I was the one kidnapped Don Barnes to his batchelor party just before his wedding (I won't mention who all was in attendence - you can probably guess).

So I know a little... Yeah I know a lil' bit...

On a collab, I had envisioned maybe laying down a drum track, bass track and scratch rhythm (maybe a keyboard or pad) to lay out the basic song structure and put the individual audio tracks on my site. You could then suck them down to your DAW and add leads, percs, rhythms and whatever else - or even change whatever.

I see it as kind of a fast fusion off-meter piece, wherein after the basic tracks were satisfactory, we could trade lead riffs back and forth during the breaks.

We could take our time - no hurry, but it would be way fun I think.
