I don't hate Dare, it's got some good tracks but it was just too pop and superficial for me compared to their earlier, darker (but also more clever and witty) music. I think they lost a lot of their wit when the guys from Heaven 17 went their own way. Reproduction is the perfect one for me.

I don't "mind" Prince but I've long thought he's overrated. I was thinking about that the other day when the news about Bowie hit. I don't actually like much of Bowie's music but I don't consider him overrated.Blue Phase Music wrote:Eh. I grew up with Prince. I guess I'm just used to his music. I don't mind it.

IMO the Heaven 17 albums are less entertaning than Human League after Ware/Marsh.

It already seemed an odd combination back then.Numanoid wrote:Crash was them wanting to get that "Prince/Minneapolis" sound aided by Jam/Lewis, but expect Human that album is dour
What did work well I think was David Bowie and Nile Rogers, which also seems a strange partnership at first. I still like Let's Dance.

I love oldskool music! Nothing beats a bunch of apes hitting a tree stump with sticks.

When I think Funk I always hear certain things like wah wah guitar, brass section, and crazy bass linesNumanoid wrote:Rodgers also did well with Duran Duran/Power Station

I love Parliament/Bootsy funk, but not so much Funkadelic (too much guitar)

I was really into the Laswell/Buckethead/Bootsy funk projects way back when. I know some of it was under the name Praxis.Numanoid wrote:I love Parliament/Bootsy funk, but not so much Funkadelic (too much guitar)

I like the more polished Funk made by artists from the Quincy Jones stable in the late 70's and early 80's (QJ himself, Rufus, Patrice Rushen, Brothers Johnson, Michael Jackson even).Numanoid wrote:I love Parliament/Bootsy funk, but not so much Funkadelic (too much guitar)

Well... he's right, prehistoric music is too post modern anyway. I wish I recorded the sound of the impending big bang. Now THAT was music!

The way Prince managed to catch the imagination of both fans and other artists in the 80's, no doubt he is a genius.
But not my cup of tea

His Purple Rain movie helped him a lot, without it he might never have become so popular.Numanoid wrote:The way Prince managed to catch the imagination of both fans and other artists in the 80's, no doubt he is a genius.
