I see that a number of people have submitted entries so far, and thats very cool of them. I really don't want to sound like an asshole, so please do keep in mind that the following is only my own personal opinion, but...

At $98 for CurveEQ, this is a little less than the $5,000-$10,000 I usually charge for corporate branding packages, or even the $1000 for a small company's logo... and no one gets paid unless you receive 25 entries, even if you end up using one of the submissions for your business! Obviously, there are plenty of talented designers on here who are willing to enter the contest, and I say more power to them. What bothers me more is what I perceive to be a case of taking advantage of the kindness of strangers. If you were running a wanna-be studio out of your spare bedroom, I could understand. As the proprietor of a real business, you should really be prepared to pay for necessary business expenses, such as your logo. If you have already retained a designer and are not satisfied with the results you are getting, that designer needs to revise their design until it meets with your specifications, or you should not be required to pay. In that case, find a new artist who is a better fit (perhaps even someone on KVR), and pay them an appropriate fee for the services they are providing.

After reading the above paragraph, I do sound like a bit of an asshole, and that is truly not my intent. My real point has to do with art not being a thing of value, and the cheapening of design as a profession. Why pay for professional design services? Just get a bunch of anonymous people to do it for free, and pick the one you like the best! It reminds me of all the recording studios going out of business in the San Francisco area, including one owned by a friend of mine. Why pay for studio time when your Macintosh comes with a copy of Garage Band? Why even record music when you can just buy it pre-made (Loops For Acid, SmartSound, etc.), or just get someone on a web site to let you use their music for free?

Nope, I still sound grouchy. Perhaps its time for a vacation...

I can goto cgtalk.com or hardOCP.com and get graphics professionals to make me a logo for low as 20$. They absolutely FIGHT for your business... because they normally arent making much money at their "real" job...
yes, real professionals... hell people working for pixar, yahoo, viacom, time warner... Logo design is a very smallllll portion of business these days...

Then of course there are the incredibly talented people trying to widen their portfolio who will do it for absolutely free.

I have offered people here at KVR (one person so far) a substantial sum to do professional work for me. (online store etc...). And there have been other people offering their skills at lower costs, and of course less work.

I undstand what you are saying completely. There is no intention of "cheapening" the quality of work. If someone shows me they have spend a considerable time working on this project, I have stated earlier I will increase the compensation by that factor.

This competition was soley to have the people who will most likely be my customers, design the interface to business rendering their services.

Also note, I will NOT use any of this artwork unless the artist gives full permissions and they are compensated fully. If anything, this is a place for people to showcase their talents. In the case that a graphics professional is here, they need not do as such.

On the topic of the designer Im currently employing, he has done considerable work and for this reason I will pay him. Why? Because I do not feel I will be satisfied with his work, and I feel his hard work and artistic ingenuity should be rewarded. If it is of any concern, the charge is 650$ for the design. I will be paying a considerable amount of that amount and walk away with nothing but respect for his trials.

im with you rob, altho im not a graphic designer myself i know they can charge lots.im sure most people here know this too,no info has been kept from us ie where the logo will be used and such so i personally feel anyone who has entered is doing it because a)were not pros but enjoy playing with images as well as sounds
b)just for the fun of it and to help a guy out on the forum.loads of us here do stuff for others that we could charge for in the "real" world i guess its just for the sake of art in the end.

just my point of view

Rob,

I really had to debate with myself before hitting the Submit button on that post. I do feel its a message which needs to be heard, but at the same time I understand your position. No one is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to draw you a logo, and I shouldn't have a problem if anyone else wants to.

I just did it because, one, it's possible I might win, and two, I figured it would help pad the total number of entries so that someone could win at all.

I did find it odd that he's going to let people vote on the logo. I think he should choose because it's not the kind of thing one should let the barbaric masses decide (chortle, chortle). :D

Deastman, if you feel you have services you can provide me... at any price, if your work is to the quality of your rates, I will gladly entertain the idea. Price is not important right now, how customers see the intital layout, and design and logo is. If you feel you can offer the best results in those manners, it is well worth my consideration!

Please intant message me with your qualifications and rates. Id really love to know more! Perhaps if its something Im very impressed by, I hope you wouldnt mind incorporating a logo from this competition :)

Hehe :) If I really dont like it, Ill just give the prize and continue my search elsewhere :) I strongly doubt that will happen... some of the entires are actually quite fantastic.

Let's open-source muscles, too. You can start by mowing my lawn for free for the rest of the year.
