I feel the same way. There is a limit to how much gain of a complex signal can be modulated before changing the sound itself. These days I am more into the idea of limiters distorting, for both tone and loudness. Even then, a limiter which introduces distortion has it's limits, but the result is usually louder.
If I recall conversation I had with some developer, ALL modern day (prominent) limiters - distort (according to him).

IMO, limiters by themselves are - well - limited. the solution is "envelope massaging" through stages of saturation/clipping/limiting.
Gain modulation is distortion... compression is a nonlinear process blah blah.
I hate to sound simple but "modern" limiters usually attempting to do things in the cleanest way possible. So there's no discernable tone to most of them. Which can be a good thing.

Certainly one of the primary design objectives for building a modern limiter is to minimise distortion. We're pleased as regards how far we've got with that objective, limiters shouldn't be EQ'ing or destroying the source material.

On the other hand sometimes you want more grunt, so we've provided a 3 algorithm clipper pre the main limiter.

Hopefully we'll get some pictures up soon, Dave's internet's been down and he's having boiler troubles, fingers crossed they get sorted and he'll re-emerge!

Dave's boiler is connected to the internet ?? josh... "the internet of things" !...
Professional technicians are assessed by the abilities they possess.
Amateur technicians are assessed by the tools they possess - and the amount of those tools, with an obvious preference to the latest hyped ones.

No, Dave is connected to his boiler and the internet - if you remove either one of them he stops working. :D

So, Limitless would not produce "Hot" audio.... it will spit BOILED audio !! :D :D

Hope for existing customer discount ....

Zeroes and ones will take us there.

I've been lobbying kettle companies to host VSTs.
Hope for existing customer discount ....
Of course!

Nice GUI!

- the LUFS metering, will it have some integrated measuring (over the time of the track)?
- is there a program dependent release/attack time mode
- will it have some predefined types for some typical tasks ("most loudness", "most transparent",...)
- what is the maximal oversampling (4x?)
- is there a display for oversample peaks?
- what means "dynamics"? Is this the behaviour how the limiter react to transients?

Thanks. In order, the answers to your questions are: Yes, Yes, Yes, 64x, Yes and Yes :)

Looks great. Will you update Compassion to same GUI standards...? Or theres another, better, compressor coming out soon?

We've just spent a considerable amount of time developing Limitless. We haven't considered what we'll do with our lives after Limitless, because it's not out-of-the-door yet; Dave will probably spend a week in a silent room staring at the wall, I'll make some music. Perhaps we'll become monks, maybe a compressor, who knows? Either way, it won't be coming out soon because we haven't made it yet.
