I know this is probably the wrong place to be asking about this, but i really need some advise on creating websites. I have loads of music and stuff that I'd like to get on a web page with a brief bio etc, but have no idea how to do it! Could anyone recommend any links, software, books? Also, whats the crack with hosting a site, is it expensive or can you get it for free? I know it might be easier to join Soundclick or whatever, but i fancy having a blast at my own site. :)

Cheers, Im a lost cause when it comes to this stuff!

No thanks fella, but appreciate the offer. This is something i know jack shit about, so i think i should really learn how to do it myself.

My advice would be that its not hard to learn to do basic web design, as long as you have a little patience and a good book.

If you can learn good practise from the start, and not afraid of trial and error(this is how web design, programming etc works, ask any coder :D ) then you'll be able to make a simple site in very little time.

Try beginners books on HTML and CSS, and then take it from there. The basics of building and hosting a web page(on a free/cheap webspace provider) is really very simple once you get past the first steps.

Good luck mate :)

That's gutsy. The payoff can be considerable.

Looks like you've got plenty of resources, so I'll just advise you to keep that code as clean and simple as possible. Many people will recommend that you avoid MS Front Page; that's my position too. :-) To begin, Notepad or the equivalent will do fine, and won't add "stuff" to your HTML code.

When you learn how to make a website from the bottom up, you'll understand so much better how and why the Web behaves as it does. You'll be empowered to make it a little bit better. Best of all, at every step of the way there are enough new discoveries that you can start simple and become more elaborate as you learn.

Best of luck,

The job of making a website is made much easier with the right tools. Here's two free ones that are really good. The HTML-kit has a lot of extensions that will help you out with the layout of your page.

Thanks for the advise (and encouragement!). I did a class on html at uni, so i know the VERY basis fundementals. Its likely that I'll use some kind of software to make my page, rather go for the hard code route. I hear that progs like Dreamweaver and others can do a good job and involve a little less programming. I have experience with Director which i know can do sites, so i might even opt to use that. Its doesnt have to be a masterpiece, so long as it looks reasonable and hosts my music!

Cheers

Ah, you're well past the stage I was thinking of then, and already know what kind of Good Stuff awaits. :-)

Heard good things about Dreamweaver, though I haven't used it. Apparently it lets you keep control of your code better than some editors, which is my main criterion. Used to use HotMetal (capitalize how you like) but since getting the big Adobe suite for my work, which comes with an (apparently fairly good) HTML editor, I've been trying that out lately.

Considering I really prefer to use emacs, this is kind of a stretch. :-D

Whatever the tool, good luck with it!

I was a component source addict with software

The idea being you can get something together very quickly and normally follow a certain feel that users were accustom too.

I am a bit like it with web sites too, I love nuke and css etc for this fast, bolt together approach – but – its uniqueness is not always a very easy thing to achieve and in fact for the majority the web space is a place to extend your character.

For this reason being able to code your own site (or get someone to custom design to your requirements) is a better thing, though not a necessary thing.

PS: hey thanks for the kind words Robert :)

That's cool, but if you want to really understand what you're doing and how html works i advise you don't to get used/addicted to any wysiwyg tools because is easier to check out the W3 School and learn about how to make things with just a simple text editor 8). They cover alot of techniques (also javascript, css, etc) and the DIY examples are really easy to follow ;) Good luck!

My preferred tools are UltraEdit with a couple of good books on code as resources (1).

Hand coding is a lot simpler than it looks and with a sprinkling of ctrl+c/ctrl+v doesn't take too much time, either.
A decent to good graphics editor is more important, in my opinion.

On a sidenote: yes, Director can create websites of sorts, but these are going to be shockwave-apps and your site had better be chockfull of interactive multimedia to be worth the time and energy that's going to take. It's basically Flash on steroids.
Also, while the flash-player will install on just about every conceivable platform, this is not true for the shockwave-plugin, which continues to be a problem.

Groet, Erik

(1) and because I couldn't code Javascript if my life depended on it, the rollovers on my site still won't roll when overed.
Pop music delenda est.
