Welcome to the 84th One Synth Challenge! It's a friendly music competition where you can win cool prizes but most importantly, meet amazing musicians, and learn a lot about mixing, sound design, and more! :)

Crisalys was formerly a commercial synth by the mastermind MaxSynths. This thing can do some funky drums, and crazy arps. Some have been known to spontaneously combust while programming Crisalys, so please be careful.

Want to try out your skills in other contests / competitions /challenges?
  • Indaba - Has a mix of popular and indie artists with various contests like remixing and song writing. Some people from OSC have had success here, including Irion Da Ronin.
  • KVR Mix Challenge (see stickies) - Who can mix a song the best (Without adding extra recordings /musical additions)? Each person starts out with the same stems.
  • Music Cafe (KVR, see stickies) - A thematic monthly competition. Use recording, real instruments, synths and samples.
  • RemixComps - An aggregator for remix contests from a variety of artists and genres (mostly EDM) - indie and popular.
  • Soundevotion (SDCOMPO) Competition - Even longer running than the OSC, the SDCOMPO is even more niche in that you must use a tracker, and set of specific effects. Great community. OSC participant OrganicIO has been a regular there.
  • DiHalt Demoscene competitions

Good luck to everybody on this one. I will be skipping because I can't do the 32 bit synth thing anymore. My DAW simply doesn't like them and it's too much of a hassle to keep freezing tracks just to make things work.

See you all in March.

why not simply install a 32 bit daw?

That would mean having to learn to use a completely different DAW. That is not so easy to do. I use Cubase. I have Reaper, have tried to use it and am completely lost with it.

I don't have the patience to learn a new DAW.

I don't understand. Its very easy to have both 32 and 64 bit versions of your DAW installed. That is what I do. I have both versions of cubase installed and use whichever is most appropriate for the synth. I also have both 32 and 64 bit versions of mulab. Many plugins also come in both 32 and 64 bit, so both versions are equally capable.
I admit it does need extra disk space tho.

Does anyone understand how to play single notes without the sequencer being active? Have tried it with seq off and thru setting but still the same outcome.

Richard, I have no idea how to install the 32 bit version of Cubase at this point. I bought it boxed from Sam Ash, did the install and don't even know what I did with the disks at this point. And I don't recall there being two options (32 and 64 bit).

Yes, had I known I'd run into these problems and I knew I could have installed both versions, I would have. But that ship has long sailed.

Steve, In case it helps, if you have a licensed copy of cubase you can go here to download the installer:-

https://www.steinberg.net/en/support/downloads.html

use the dropdown list to choose your version. You should then be able to install 32 bit :)

I don't want to mess with it Richard. What if it ends up overwriting my current Cubase which is 7.0.7 and not 7.0.0. I'll then have to go through the update procedure again and I just can't be bothered with the hassle. And if the install goes bad then I have no DAW at all.

I'm going to leave well enough alone.

No, I got stuck with this as well! :(

Is there no noise osc in this synth? Anyone figure the best method for creating a kick with this one? Bjporter, you mentioned this was good for making drum sounds, were there presets anywhere that have them?
