I have time to shop around, but at the moment, I'm kinda going back and forth between the Yamaha HS7 and PreSonus R65 monitors. The Yamahas seem to have more range, but the PreSonus monitors have more power, and I doubt I could hear in the extended range of the Yamaha monitors, anyway. That's where graphic mastering comes in.

Or any other suggestions within that price-range, or anywhere near?

Again, I have time to shop around. I won't be able to purchase for a while.

[Edit] I admit, part of my desire for the PreSonus monitors is their appearance. Yes, I think they look cool.

[EDIT 2] I've changed the title to reflect my current dilemma. Ordering today!

I've been using the HS7's for almost a year now and I'm very happy with them. I listened to the PreSounus monitors before I bought the Yamaha's and felt that the HS7 had more detail, particularly in the upper-mids.

Just my 2 cents.

But since you've got time, take some material you know really well and listen to it on both speakers down at your local Guitar Center or Sam Ash. That's the true test of which is better for you.

I'm so used to online shopping that I hadn't even thought of demoing them at GC. Thank you, honestly.

I do have a piece that would be a good test for clarity. Now if I could reduce my tinnitus.

I can second a recommendation for the Yamaha HS-7's.
Been using them for about a year and a half...
Used to have a pair of Tannoy Reveals (blues) and they were very good as well.

Another pair that seem to get a lot of praise are the JBL LSR305's... Probably worth checking out.

I'll check out the JBLs, too, but they may be a tad small. They seem to be getting good reviews, however, I'm not sure how many of those reviews are from people with experience with higher-end monitors and not just beginners.

So, decided yet?

Not yet. Money's been an issue.

I did go to Guitar Center recently, though, and they only had the Yamaha monitors out and ready-to-try. They had other brands, as well, but nothing else that I was comparing. The listening conditions weren't optimum, either. I thought they'd be in an isolated room or something...nope, out there with all the other noise.

It will still be a while, but I'm leaning toward the Yamahas, anyway. I used to have the HS50m monitors and they did me well. I may just go back to Yamaha.

About the Yamahas, be sure to check them somewhere where is silence. I was in a shop one day, and a guy that got a pair complained they're very noisy. And he was there to return them.

Quiet time of day is probably the best I'll be able to do, other than having a good return policy wherever I buy them.

The noise can also come from a ground loop that might be hard to eliminate. Mine, HS80, had a noise for years that I couldn't get rid off. Then one day I moved to another house and could connect monitors and computer to different outlet, problem solved.

What do people think of the specs on PreSonus Sceptre S8 monitors? I may be able to get them for a decent payment. Not sure my room is big enough for them, though.

If there are no objections to these monitors, I believe later this week or early next, I'll pull the trigger on this and a Studio 192 Interface. I'll be able to add a CS18Ai at a later date for complete control of Studio On v3. :tu:

I saw a review comparing these monitors to Adam A7X monitors saying that they preferred these over the A7Xs.

I'm not sure my ears would even be able to tell the difference.

I don't have the Sceptre 8's, but I have the S6's and love them.
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.
