MogwaiBoy wrote:So is this thing actually great or not?

Anyone compare it to other kick generators like Image-Line Bassdrum, Synapse EKS, that Plugin Boutique one (Kick?), Vengeance Sounds' one, etc? I don't know or care about Nicky Romero but kick synthesis is more fun than browsing samples.
It's great for me. I liked it more than Plugin Boutique BigKick. Vengeance one it's too expensive and needs a dongle.

Requiring a dongle automatically rules out Vengeance that's for sure.

Just looking at this one (it was the first one that I googled), there is some fundamental difference. What I think is cool about SAK, and I don't own it, is that the envelope shaping is so detailed. There are other kick synthesizers that do the typical 909 style sounds, and, they may sound better to your ears, but, I think that the pitch EG manipulation is really key to getting the precise sound that you need out of SAK and I think that's harder to achieve with simpler envelopes.

Related to this is the feedback that you get, e.g., the pitch of the kick as you change the e.g. I made my own clone in Reaktor, but, those details aren't worth the effort of figuring out.

All of Maschines drum synths
Drumatic
KickR
Microtonic
Drumaxx
Battery
So that one beats KICK at synthesizing bass drums too?
Oh wait are we ruling out drum synths that use samples as part of their synth process ?
Oh crap, so you mean we can't include Kick by Sonic Academy that uses samples too.
Nice try though ;)

^The man asked about bass drum synths. There's nothing synth about Battery. He also said he doesn't want to browse through samples.

Indeed KICK's attacks are samples, but we can't exclude it because it's our main actor here and it's got a nice fat synthetic body. :hihi:

Forget to mention I also own Microtonic and still prefer to use KICK for BDs.

Please keep it on Topic... no need to ruin another Thread by changing it into another famous dick fight about which one thinks he has the answer for such a bold question (which is the best kick synth)... the answer depends on MULTIPLE FACTORS / NEEDS / KNOWLEDGE of a musician, producer or sound designer... the question raises only more questions and an individual only can answer it for himself depending on it needs... so please unless your not making the exact same thing/music, stop arguing and make this to a "We want News about Kick(ing Ass)" Thread again...

By the way, are there any??? (sorry)

That's too strong, it depends on some arbitrary definition of synthesizer. Sure, Battery doesn't have an oscillator that is any more than a sample playback engine, but, in a kick synthesizer, the oscillator proper is not a significant synthesis component. In SAK the oscillator isn't particularly interesting. What makes SAK interesting are the envelopes. I found, however, that it's easy to get lost overdoing it and Battery has the few extra features in the envelopes that seem to matter most, e.g., a two stage decay on the pitch and hold on the amplitude.

This is a general thread about KICK, so I can talk here whatever I want about this product and similar offerings from competition.

And I'm not gonna ask if there are any news about the new KICK... :P

And in Xils-Lab StiX you can have sample or synthesis for either the thump, the body or the noise. Everything is possible. And more.

How is it not relevant to compare a product with other similar products? Ofcourse people have their own personal taste... but we can still discuss what we perceive to be the merits of a particular plugin - and people can agree or disagree... it's just normal discussion. Subjectivity is always implied, but not sacred. I'm not here to bash on any plugin, especially one's I've never touched before.

For what it's worth, Sonic Academy's Kick still interests me the most even if other people say there is better out there.

things getting a little heated in here!

Bryan, is every control on this registered to the host ?
The first version is unusable in Maschine without continually switching to mouse/keyboard, because so many controls are not registered with the host.

Everything that can be mapped will be mappable yes. I guess the only real tricky parts are the envelope nodes
