One of the things that's always puzzled me about music is it's capacity to generate very strong emotional and physiological responses in listeners. I've always wanted to know HOW/WHY that happens, and in my research I think I've been drawing closer to an answer to the question that I think I'll ultimately be able to turn into something a bit more pragmatic for composers/songwriters to deliberately put to use in their work.
So, I wrote this post to give a brief overview of ITPRA, which is a general theory of expectation outlined by David Huron. ITPRA, I believe, offers a lot of interesting and unique insight into the systems at play in music listening. And in future posts I'll be diving in more depth to each of the aspects of the theory and how to put them to use.
