Yeah, tough crowd, innit :D. But I thought about it some more and I gotta give credit for the image of playing a grand piano behind your neck, I mean, you'd hold it in the air just behind your head, like, while you play!

...its like, lollerskates

Jens,

(concerning Bach and BAROCKMUSIK I have to tell you something in a pm some day though... whereas some (err, many) instruments are missing over here, there's a laaaarge collection of fine music, including non-miefig-no-courtofBaronSneefnose-baroque    .)

yes, sure - great - I'm interested :D

(I have to admit though that I partly like the
'brandeburgische Konzerte' especially Harnoncourt's version  - and a lot of Telemann's works are fantastic 8)

You can be pedents all you like. I am saying there is a difference between a computer and a traditional instrument, because there is. There is a huge difference. To be specific and "clever" and so on, the basic difference is you can play one and not the other. When I say `play` I mean a series of tone in real time. You cannot play Bach's 1st prelude on a computer.

So you can define a computer as an instrument, well done, great word play. Yet regardless of pointless semantic arguments which do not alter reality in the least bit, there is a great deal of difference between playing a piece on the piano and masterbating in your bedroom on a VST instrument.

And now I'm gonna drag a grand piano out to a campfire and fart in a flute. Defensive reply away... :D

Nor a drum.

Cue drummer jokes.

can computer keyboards be used as a clavier : YES
can audio input be used to trigger midi : YES
does it take knowledge and determination to understand the used methods to do so : YES
do artists make live music using computers : YES
is it possible to be a shitty musician on a pc : YES
is it possible to be a genius on a pc : YES
can a virtuoso be compared to a nerdy speed freak on a pc : YES

Please give me one valid argument why the f**k a computer isn't a instrument

but the most important shit argument that needs to be weakened : everyone can make music on a pc
of course anyone can but everyone can make music with the mentioned bag of nails as well - but if it sounds good to others.

a computer is a instrument and the most versatile and omni functional instrument ever created
and the big quality differences in music at kvr simply prove it is a instrument you must learn how to master

that is why i still don't sound like sleek or dt or putte or kriminal yet
some filthy talented folks at kvr can't read or write music on paper and can't play other instruments but the pc

Steady on Remco. You're in danger of making sense.

coolcool ...

(but its pedants - heehee)
Equilibrium wrote:I am saying there is a difference between a computer and a traditional instrument, because there is.
not when you are using the computer to play music there ISNT (and i Am talking about playing here rather than composing / arranging - as i have been all along)
Equilibrium wrote:There is a huge difference.
heh - saying it twice doesnt make it so
Equilibrium wrote:To be specific and "clever" and so on, the basic difference is you can play one and not the other.
i admit in my case this is true - i can play my laptop but i cant (convincingly) play any other instruments
Equilibrium wrote:When I say `play` I mean a series of tone in real time. You cannot play Bach's 1st prelude on a computer.
heehee - to be pedantic (you said i could) shouldnt that be tones ???

more seriously - of course with the right software its possible to play such pieces of music on a computer just as if you pick an appropriate 'traditional' instrument (rather than the drums) you could play it
Equilibrium wrote:So you can define a computer as an instrument, well done, great word play.
its not word play - its an acceptance of a reality you seem unwilling to see
Equilibrium wrote:Yet regardless of pointless semantic arguments which do not alter reality in the least bit, there is a great deal of difference between playing a piece on the piano and masterbating in your bedroom on a VST instrument.
of course there is - theres also a great deal of difference between playing a piece live in front of an audience on your laptop and masturbating over a complex piece of bach on your music room piano at home
Equilibrium wrote:And now I'm gonna drag a grand piano out to a campfire and fart in a flute. Defensive reply away... :D
no need to be defensive - im on perfectly solid ground here as far as i can see ...

... i see no definitive opinion here - just a group of people whose opinions fall across the whole range of a sliding scale of what constitutes a musical instrument and / or a musical performance - the only thing that surpises (and TBH disappoints) me is how some are unwilling to even countenance the possibility that the definition of what constitutes a musical instrument could possibly change as technology advances ... after all we are all still reading these posts by candlelight and saddling up the horses if we need to go on a journey arent we ???

yeah, I sure was being defensive because I can can only play guitar, bass (both electric and fingerpicked standing), keys/piano and drums (o.k. admittedly I'm the crappiest drummer ever though I took lessons for about one and a half years )

like i told one of my gf when she showed me her alt sax : gal that`s one overawing complex piece of industrial strength. :D she smiled and said : compared to your refined delicate shiny musicbox it is

A computer can be an instrument but it needs an interface. A keyboard and a mouse is not a real time interface for music. A pattern grid and piano roll is not an instrument interface. To really PLAY an instrument you need real time control.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.
