Mandrake 10.0

Just downloade all three ISO's of Mandrake Linux 10.0 !!

But im a no one to linux.. so i need documentation and help.. the docs on www.mandrakelinux.com only go till 9.x .... what to do..??? cant wait to get this loaded...

Well, I think Mandrake 10 is a kernel 2.6, so this may be important to keep in mind.
If you stick to these conditions, I think installing will go smooth. Installing SuSE certainly was (1), and Mandrake is supposed to be easier.

A few months ago I installed mandrake 10 on a multiboot system, no problems booting windows(1)...
but I might just be lucky

mandrake is a very easy to install linux
it`s even more easyer that windows xx
i`m still waiting for mandrake 10.1
becource my modem does not work very well
i have to start mandrake 10 with a other kernel
10.1 will be released soon
it think 2 or 3 months there is already alpha version

GOOFED UP!!!!!

im good at this..

so i start the linux installation... during which the formatting application asks me where... I say remaining disk space on windows disk (thats an option).

Now my primary hard disk that has the win OS on it has been devided over two partitions. One with the OS, and the other where i keep Archives (BAD idea i just realized).. anywaz... linux does it's job.. and then asks me what all i need to install ??? well i clik the relevent things (including Gnome, cause thats what i worked with once on REd hat 6.0) and then next.. and the dammed thing saz that there is not enough disk space..(i am sure there was at least 4GB on the win partition) so well i select the bare minimum with the X desktop(option on next installation page)

It asks for video card selections and all.. i select and say test.. the screen goes blank for some time.. but then comes back on with the (i presume) prefered settings.. i say ok.

reboot and all into linux , and after the intial linux boot page, where i suppose it loads drivers and all, my screen goes blank... and nothing then on!!! so i reboot the machine and go to windows...

now here i see, using partition magic, that it has made the Linux partitions of the 2nd partition on the hard disk. Archives.

i think that what ill do is that ill delete these partitions, make a new one out of the Win patition, and next time tell linux to install here.

So i start deleting these partitions and mid Partition magic saz that it does not support these types.. I go to the diskmanager of XP and format from there... all ok...

so now have a primary partition, for the Win OS, and and extended, which hosts two logical partitions... archives and the newly made 700MB one... i think ill put things bak to normal by merging the two logical partitions... mid way through i get this error saying that process failed...

Now in windows, my computer does not see ARCHIVES !!!! this puts me in shit. Restart does not help either... so i launch Partition magic and there this partition is visible, along with the new one... i do a chek for errors... and this is what i get.

File size does not match FAT allocation for file...

i need this partition tommorow... what do i do ?????

but you better stop messing with your partition-table this way, mate

the Linux partition was maybe ReiserFS (I htink Mandrake uses this filesystem by default) - might be that PM isn't able to deal with it

Anyway - I istalled Mandrake several times (just out of curiosity) besides windows and it actually is dead-easy
but only be sure to use expert-mode because then you can control what exactly the partition-manager of the install-wizard is doing

yes, indeed, but the install-wizard offers to create a boot-floppy-disk so that you afterwards still can boot your Linux installation - then you only need to reconfiger Lilo from the configuration-manager.

thanks... im giving it another shot now... ill partition using Partition magic now... that would make things a bit easier while installing Linux..


BTW what is a good partition size.. would bout 2gig be ok??

yeah Mandrake is a peace of piss, docs come bundled with the the installed OS.

Youll want to check out Thacs RPMs and add it to your urpmi database so can install it all over the internet.

i will look into audio.. but not too soon.. first night with this OS (there is a VST host for Linux ??? i think i heard there was.. goodie)
