Worth upgrading to S1 v3 Pro for my needs?

Greetings all,

I am starting to get into recording with a set up in a home bedroom project studio.

I currently have the v2 professional license so the upgrade will be 100 dollars.

I plan on doing using a good amount of midi virtual instruments tracking (drums, bass, light synth) for pop/rock type music.

Is the upgrade v3 worth it for my kind of work?

No, discounted updates and "revolutionary coming soon" just simply means "Hey we are not making enough straight cash off these idiots, lets hype hype hype.
You will gain literally nothing by updating now, the discounted updates will come around again and if you are just starting out with Studio One you probably wont even have gotten around to learning all the new 'Revolutionary' features

Just try the demo. If you find things in the demo that you think are worth the upgrade cost for you ($50 currently), go for it, if not, pass on it.

Not sure how anyone else could ever know if something is worth it for you. The only way to know that is to try it and answer that question for yourself.

Personally i would say that the instruments are not worth it in v3 at full cost, but at the $50 then possibly, but i am 100% sure i never reach for those instruments, but that may just be me, their virtual analogues use way too much CPU for the quality they produce and i already have Kontakt so their soundsets are just so so.

May I ask where the upgrade cost is 50 dollars? Everywhere I'm seeing is 100 dollars.

It's $50 off upgrades during February ..... So yours would be $99 ...

Ah, I thought $99 was the regular upgrade price. I must have conflated that with the old Producer upgrades or something. Sorry about that.

At any rate, the plugin update is $79 so if you plan to use it, that's probably your best path.

i was finally going to upgrade to v3 but then soundtoys just announced their crazy sale and i am pretty sure will get WAY more use of those than all of the stuff in v3.

personally, i feel that in a way v2 prof. is such a wicked and reliable host. it does what it does extremely well.

At $99 i have to say no, there are plenty of synths you could pick up for $99 that are better than anything in S1, I really can't see anybody buying S1 for it's instruments.

regarding the effects.

to my knowledge, they only added the rotator and bit crusher plugins. the main news regarding the plugins were the synth and sampler.

so they basically added 4 things that everyone already has a bag full of. the sampler kind of makes sense since they are going pretty heavy into the sample kit sales area, but the synth, while decent, was a little perplexing.

Based on your requirements OP, I would say the one thing that may sway you to upgrade to V3 would be multi-instruments. Regarding the content itself, nah. But, the splitter for effects, scratch pad, arranger, and multi-instruments all could play into our potential upgrade being worthwhile.

If I were you and I don't have virtual instruments (synths or whatever) and I don't have Acoustic Drums (AD, BFD, SD ..etc) I would pick those rather than upgrading to version 3.

What synths do you have (hardware or software)? I suggest you demo some synths like Diva, Zebra, Dune, Spire ...etc and see which one serves you more. For light synth, do you mean light on the cpu usage? or not a complex one? Anyway, I suggest Dune 2, Sylenth1 ..etc (there are really so many). Waves Element is $72 now I think and it can be a great match for Pop/Rock. It is not very light on the cpu though, but you can switch between the versions Element 1 and 2 anyway.

Impact is a very good sounding as drum machine, but for acoustic drums I would look at Addictive Drums or similar acoustic drums library.

Good question. That's one of the relevant questions to ask anyone before giving "advice". Along with...

1. Do you feel you're lacking anything currently?
2. Does anything on the 3.x product page look like it might be useful to you?
3. Is it for fun or profit or both, your music adventures?
4. Is $100 something you can spend and not really miss?

I would say that you should never give too much weight to Internet opinions about DAWs, either way, with some saying something sucks or is a rip off or some others saying a thing is the greatest thing since the resurrection of Jesus. Instead, always demo anything - before - you buy it and always make up your own mind about how to spend your hard earned money.
