Mix Engine FX are capable of more than just analog emulations. It enables the mix buss itself to become a modular plugin environment. Now it's up to plugin developers to imagine new ways to use it.

Check out Scope to see what developers have done with its modular environment. Some Reaktor ensembles make use of it, too.

It's a mix engine replacement that affects all channels in the group, which allows for interaction among channels. Probably not of much use to most people yet, but could be something that opens up more possibility in the future.

good point.. I wonder what the more esoteric uses might be. Some kind of weird FM stuff maybe?

It's not so much console emulation that's new, but how that all works. One bus plugin reaches back from the bus to each channel individually, which is a different thing than putting 32 instances of Slate on 32 channels.

I think there are probably some good opportunities there. Like Uncle E said above, it's kind of a modular thing going on there.

In case it hasnt been mentioned, the update is already out

Post

It's a free update so I guess I shouldn't have been quite as harsh -- but when the platform introduced by the free update is so clearly a new money sink to get people buying a new line of FX plugins because of their new "standard," I just think that's a lame direction to take. Nor have I heard / seen anything yet to convince me why this new standard is really necessary or even useful. But, I'm sure there will be much discussion and demonstration of that in the weeks to come, so we'll see.

There's now a Remote Control app for Windows tablet.

Still no Midi tracks in Console view.

I totally like the new features of the free(!) update. Some companies would totally charge for this. Good job, Presonus.

That kind of thing was entirely possible with VST2; its how any 'wormhole' plugin works, for example, or plugins like Elevayta SpaceBoy... multiple instances of a plugin can be written to communicate with each other and share data.
In fact, I thought there was a console plugin which did that too, though I cant remember which one it was. Satson, maybe?

Im presuming the difference is pretty much just that that you dont have to apply this plugin per channel, and less setup. But that's more about how the host instances things, not sure it needs a new plugin standard for 'insert this plugin on all channels in this group'

(edit : However its entirely feasible that, like ARA, this does plug some gap in what AU/VST3 allows as possible. I can see how companies would chafe at the restrictions of Steinberg's thinking wrt what use VST3 plugins can be put to. )

Certainly going after Protools, every interview about how I switched !!!! They have taken a lot of the workflow and features too, which is a good thing. Hope they can make it all work without crashing.

What a bag of crap.

This is 100% marketing ploy, 0% something needed by the user base. We are drowning in plugins already. We are drowning in "analog emulation" plugins already. The last thing anybody "needs" is yet another plugin standard, with yet more plugins to spend your $$ on. And what's more, plugins that do the exact same thing a million other plugins we already have, already do.

Seriously, what a load of junk.

and that is officially my two cents.

How can something free and optional steer you away from anything? You don't have to use Chanel effects, yiu don't even have to update....it's free.....and optional.

I think there is a lot of great stuff in there. I use full melodyne studio, the intigration enhancements are great, lots of workflow updates....i have seen paid cubase updates with less of interest than this free .1 update.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

The iPad remote app just got an update today for compatibility with S1 3.2 including 'VCA faders, Mix Engine FX, and Fat channel control'.
Oops.

i actually don't mean a control but a portable S1, like Cubasis.. and the big upgrade in 3.2 is being able to link with it.. it was actually a joke but who knows, it's not as if a dev hasn't built up to something "revolutionary" before which ends up being an ios app :hihi:
I know, I was more commenting on the fact that they gave some of the game away.

Uncle E wrote:In addition to many enhancements in speed and usability, Presonus announces Mix Engine FX, a new plugin standard that breaks the boundaries of what is possible with current plugin standards. The first Mix Engine Effect, Console Shaper, is available free with Studio One 3.2 and more Mix Engine Effects will be coming from Presonus, Slate Digital, Softube, Acustica Audio, and other developers in the coming months.
