Great ! I love Sci-Fi too !

2001...............If you don't like it, you should do some research about the film. It will open your eyes to all SF. It's not a simple film. Maybe action wise it is, but the questions that it asks have yet to be answered for the human race. For an interesting take, go here http://www.rense.com/general7/alchemkubrick.htm . And there are spliced bootlegs of Lynch's Dune that combine the gore of the US 2hr20min version with the Japanese Laser disc 6hr30min version that was shown on TV there. It's a nice little puppy to behold. Heard that Lynch is going to release his original cut 7hr45min in early 2003. DVD of course.

The "Rama" series would make excellent movies, I agree!!

But what I'm REALLY waiting for is for them to finally make a movie of Larry Niven's "Ringworld" series...!! I've heard rumors that th idea was being shopped around, but...

I'll second - Rama & Ringworld are both nice combos of epic scifi and action-adventure!

Expensive ones, I'd guess, but with the technology available today (see LOTR & Episodes)

My SF favs are:

Planet of the Apes (this B-type vibe roxx )

Encounters of the Third Kind (builds up nicely towards a spectacular encounter)

2001 : Space Odyssey (you should read the book(s) first...as always in these cases)

Empire Strikes Back (bit on the soapie side, but serves the purpose well)

Alien (scaaary...with a good tension.... plus S.Weaver !!)


Now when I think of it, not a single SF movie comes close to SF books. The biggies (like Rama, Hyperion, Helliconia, Dune) just cannot be compressed on film. The screens are too small the reels are way too short

I recommend that yous people spend your bucks on paperbacks instead!

If anybody here likes SOLARIS, also check out STALKER. It is based on a short story of the Strugackiy (sp? can't remember) brothers - Picnic on the Land of Nowhere? something like that, also a gem in and by itself - and it's absolutely minimalistic. Basically shot without major sets or special f/x, just using the camera, lighting, editing, and the natural environment to establish a sense of the fantastic, it is a slow but delicious treat. You've never seen greener hills or rustier factory buildings...

Lem, as far as I know, has never been properly translated to the screen. They had a painfully shitty TV series made out of his Pilot Pirx short story collection back in the late '70s or early '80s in Hungary, using stuff like a manual citrus juicer (without decals or paint) to portray a moon base... There was also a Polish (or Czech?) movie, again early '80s, based on one of his last Pirx stories (the one about the robot rebelling on a starship) with Saturn in the title, which had marginally better f/x and a dumbed-down plot, but that's all I know.

I always wanted to see his Eden made into a movie, not to mention a couple of his other books whose titles I could kill right about now to remember...

Wow, what a great thing to find Stanislaw Lem fans!

Eden would be a good book for translation although I thik Fiasco would be good too. Any of the Star Diaries would be great too.

I didn't see anyone mention Slaughterhouse 5. That was a pretty good adaptation of Vonnegut's book.

I read all these godamn posts and I am sure I saw not one mention of Barbarella !!!
I will site this movie simply because of it's influence on so many forms of media: comic books(huge influence on the X-men), music(Duran Duran got their name from a planet in this movie) and of course the porn industry(who could forget the orgasmatron, an evil type of "organ" that was supposed to pleasure Jane Fonda's character to death!)and countless other examples. It's my favorite. I have to rent it once a year and it's still completely outrageous today. Shame on all of you !
My other favorite has to be Brazil. Ok that should prove I'm not a total cheeseball!
And I vote Ninja Scroll for my favorite anime.

He was played by Millie O'Shea if I rember.
