I'm having a small problem.
I'm looking for a good, free/affordable Android app that can do the following:
- record in WAV, 44kHz and higher
- ideally in 24bit (won't happen with most ADC's of mobile phones and tablets)
- capability to use SmartPhone headsets (bar minimum, TRRS plugs)
- control over the input gain
- show me the maximum peak value
- should bar minimum support Android 4.1
For years I was using Kohei YASUI's PCM recorder. It can record in RAW WAV, up to 48kHz and can use connected headsets as microphones. Things were fine - until last night where I had to record a quick voice over, and that thing stated to clip like a madman. Reason: unknown; solution: declipper, better solution: a gain knob (not available in this app!).
So I'm looking for an alternative, and I actually found two:
Audiophile Hi-Q MP3 Recorder
- can record in WAV
- has a gain control
- has a very basic metering tool
- costs 3,59EUR (demo version available that records 10minutes)
- can be bought OUTSIDE of the AppStore
Pfitzinger Voice Design Field Recorder
- can record in WAV up to 96kHz(!)
- can connect propriety USB devices with Android 5.0 and up (XLR ports!)
- has a more detailed metering tool
- costs 4,95EUR (no demo!)
- can only be bought through the Google AppStore
My question out to you folks - do you have ANY experience with these tools?
If so, what should I look out for? Can you recommend them?
Or do you know of alternatives?
If so, then please tell me.
On top of that, I'm looking for an FFT Analysis solution for an Android Tablet (10") with connectivity of a third party mic as well. Either via propriety USB devices or TRRS plugs.
As of this moment, I'm using keuwlsoft Spectrum Analyzer and tried one or two other apps. But they all use the built in microphone. Which is IMO not really satisfying if you quickly want to measure the frequency response of a location (read: FOH usage!)
I know that iOS has great solutions for that section already - but I'd love to see similar on Android.
Thanks for helping out and giving feedback.
Definitely appreciated.
Android - Looking for good/free/affordable recording app w/ input gain control (bonus: FFT analyzer)

I don't really have any solid experience with Field Recorder, but when I was up in the sticks in NE Thailand last summer, I needed to get hold of an audio recorder in a hurry, and I saw the Pfitzinger app in the Google Store, so downloaded that to make some drunken audio recordings. The version available then (5.7) only went to 48KHz (more than enough for my humble purposes), but I was impressed with the quality of the recordings using the default settings. and the built-in mic on my Xperia. I'm glad you posted this, 'cos I've just upgraded to the latest version. I'm sure that with some tweaking, this is capable of producing great results.

Sorry - late response.
I'm glad that you're glad. I hope you enjoy the update.
I'm still lost which route to go for however.
And it can't be that there are only iOS users out there. So yeah... feedback would be great.
