BTW the FM-X engine in the new Yamaha Montage workstation seems to have 128 voices, 8 opearators (not 6) and 88 algorithms.
Having a combination of a sample based workstation, FM and a multimode filter that could be used with teh FM is not new. This was already included in the SY77 and SY99 and also with the additional DX plugin board for the Motif ES (which included the whole DX7 engine on a small expansion board).
Is any of that relevant to the Volca FM ?

Considering that Yamaha licensed FM synthesis from Stanford University, I highly doubt that Korg are paying any licensing fees to Yamaha. But I could see them limiting polyphony out of respect to Yamaha. After all, they had an ownership stake in Korg for a while during the lean years.

or respect for their other volcas, i.e the volca keys

Yes, that too.

I had a DS-8. It used Yamaha-manufactured YM2164 chips (same as the DX100 and FB-01) but Korg never presented it as an FM synth; they distanced themselves from Yamaha synths really. The programming interface was very different (less flexible, more accessible) and "frequency modulation" was not even mentioned in the manual.
FEATURES OF THE KORG DS-8

1. DIGITAL VOICE GENERATION
The DS-8 features warm, digitally generated voices (programs), each of which combines two oscillators to create rich and complex tones. Each oscillator can be set to a variety of waveforms. By using separate EG'S (Envelope Generators) to control each oscillator's timbre and level the character of each note can change in time, providing the random tonal variations that occur in actual acoustic instruments. Natural, expressive acoustic sounds plus exciting contemporary synthesizer voices: the DS-8 can do it all!
The description is pretty funny today :D

The "two oscillators" were each a modulator and carrier, with a "timbre" parameter controlling the modulator level. IIRC, the modulator frequency was locked into 0.5x or an integer multiple of the carrier frequency, controlled by a "spectrum" parameter.

any news on this? :hihi:

If the V-FM is as direct and easy to use as the Sample then this is a no-brainer. Looking forward to hear what Nick at Sonicstate will do with it.

Indeed.

I still maintain it's a while off yet. No stores (that I can find anyway) have pre-order info up.
Also Sound on Sound have said something similar in the latest edition.

Yeah, probably you're right. But maybe we'll get a date at the Messe. I'm really looking forward to this one! :wheee:
