Host: Cubase SX2
Soundcard: Terratec dmx6fire
Ram: 1 Gb
CPU: P4 2.67 GHz
Windows XP

I am making a soundtrack for a movie. I've tried importing divx, dv and mpeg file in SX2 and I have jerky playback and picture hanging while audio goes on while scrolling...I have 1 instance of Kontakt loaded going through freeverb2 (freeware cpu light reverb). I've made every windows tweak possible to improve performance. Everything else in SX2 works just fine except for this video thing. Any suggestions?

Look to your video card. I have a similar spec'ed system with a 2.53ghz instead, and it works fine for video in Cubase SX. Done several projects in fact. Using a Maxtrox G450 for those projects on dual monitors. But do consider, compressed file formats do eat CPU. If you can use an uncompressed format, it might help a little bit.

How do those files play outside of Cubase, BTW?

I've done a fair bit of work with video in SX2 and it can be tricky to get workinig correctly. Alot of formats seem to be unstable, as you describe.

Here's a few things I've learnt along the way:

- Don't try to import huge files. You say you are working on a film. Are you trying to import an hour long movie? If so, break it up into scenes of 10 minutes or so.

- Don't use heavily compressed formats such as Divx - the cpu drain is too much for Cubase. Also, don't use uncomressed formats (such as DV) because the amount of disk streaming will be too high. Remember Cubase's video player is not too sophisticated, so you need to feed it fairly unsophisticated formats (see next point)!

- On my system, I found mpeg1 (PAL VCD settings) to be the smoothest format, using DirectShow as the Playback method (Device Setup / Video Player). The good thing about mpeg1 vcd settings is that they are very rigid, so no matter what application you use to create the mpeg file, it should work consistently (unlike divx, quicktime etc).

- Turn off video thumbnails in the preferences.

- try moving the video file to different drives / partitions.

that's all i can think of right now. Good luck.

I never thought of breaking up the file in 10 minute segments...I think that could help because things start falling apart just after 5 minutes pass...The video files play normally outside cubase...The graphics card is ATI Radeon 7500 with 64 Mb of memory
