Well, it turns out it was live. It was called Sound2MIDI and produced by Audioworks. I don't recall much about it; I found the (all but) empty box and some details within said it would run on Windows 3.1 or later and required a minimum of 8MB of RAM (yes, that's 8MB). The cost was £99. It appears there was a version 1.5. I don't know where my CD (or FD??) is, but it'll be somewhere.

I also found a link to a review in Sound On Sound from January 1997. That edition of the mag would have been printed in December 1996.

I find this comment particularly poignant about music promotion and the internet.

A guy from Sony states 'it definately could happen ......and it has all the labels shaking in their boots'

and this is from '97........20 years ago, yet the record industry still hasnt figured it out

I watched this video recently, and was cringing with the realization that two of the guys showing their software, are doubtless responsible for making the unnecessary and excessive (mis)use of the 'words/terms'; "ACTUALLY" and "GO AHEAD", part of nearly all software "tutorial video" demonstrators dialogue. It drives me out of my f'ing mind, actually, and I don't hesitate to go ahead and hit stop, while making a mental note of that 'authors' name, and/or company, so I will avoid them in the future.

I have a little box made by Sonuus called guitar to midi that does this pretty well. Also have one for bass.
