The Ring for pschological horror is a great recommendation, I just didn't like the second one at all. Ichi the Killer while not exactly a horror film, does has some gut wrenching scenes, as well the end of Audition. Evil Dead 2 and Shaun of the Dead have to be two of the funniest horror movies ever made, Braindead and Bad Taste too - but they were just OTT. The first Alien film was definetely great for tension and atmosphere (watching the extras, you realise how simple some of the most daunting scenes ever put to screen really are - the Alien Egg's movement are really Ridley Scott's hands moving around).

Though generally, the output of Japan especially Tartan Asia Extreme is truly showing up all Western attempts, they've constantly put out some classic horror titles over the last few years.

That twisted mental horror thing is clay in the hands of a director like Lynch..Can't mention that one without a nod to 'Mulholland Drive'

two scenes in that flick with MAJOR Horror appeal:

When the guy sees that whatever the f**k that thing is behind the diner..

When the chick sees her own corpse in the bungalow (best horror moment in recent history for me!!!)

Not to mention Badalementi's awesome work on those soundtracks..whoot!

as a movie, i prefer Mulholland Drive.
and the scenes you describe were really scary indeed.

however, at least for me, Lost Highway is even more powerful in term of mental horror. i was really insanely moved by some scenes. beautifully crippy. :scared:

Someone else mentioned Jacob's Ladder - that is one brilliant film.
You should see 'Ghost Story', that one's a another nasty one..

Jacob's Ladder is actually used in 'Death therapy' for terminally ill patients to assist in accepting thier own emminemnt mortality..

Another vote for the Ring trilogy, especially Ring 0 (the 'other' Saddako was just fuckin freaky). And kudos for the US remake as actually being fairly decent, and having amazingly effective sound design.

Its been ripped off and sent-up to hell, but there were moments in Blair Witch Project that genuinely had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.

Another trilogy I liked was Prophecy with Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel.

Lost Highway was just undiluted insanity.

Return of the Living Dead was a blast, with a great soundtrack, and some brilliant lines ("I love you. Let me eat your bbbrrrrraaaaaain" or "f**k that Im not f**king with those f**king motherfuckers").

Im sure Ive forgotten a couple of classics, but no doubt someone'll remember them...

It was probably one of my most memorable experiences in seeing a movie. I already knew that film the was not real, but the effect it had on the audience (mostly ignorant to it's non-fictional status) was extremely contagious;

When they stumbled into the area with the wooden figures hagning from the trees

When the chick unwrapped the bundle & saw whatever the hell that was (teeth & tongue?)

Seeing the chubby guy facing the corner at the end.

yep..good stuff. It was funny just how many ppl didn't want to admit to getting the absolute shit scared out of them by something completey lacking in commercial effects. It was almost like a collective denial of the human imagination..very strange thing to witness.

Ppl were actually offended at admiting to being scared by seeing (or NOT) seeing something without a guy in a red suit with a tail jumping around..

Idiots.
