System: Athlon 2500+ (Barton chip), 512 mb RAM, MSI k7n2 mobo

I've been experiencing a strange problem for the last few months in my DAW. When I have a project with a lot of VSTi's and tracks, I initially have a lot of crackling and distorted, slowed-down audio. This is especially exagerrated when running Battery (with the ns7 kit) and Orchestral. The f**ked-up audio is especially evident during a complex drum part and I have to press stop just to let my system catch its breath! Oh yeah, the CPU meter spikes when these problems occur.

Now, here's the weird part: after waiting an hour or two, the problem minimizes a GREAT DEAL. I can run the song even with the most complex drum passages without a hiccup.

I suspect it doesn't have a lot to do with CPU. I'm thinking this is a RAM problem, as I only have 512 mb of DDR (PC 2100, I think). My question is this: why does waiting an hour make a lot of difference in performance? What's going on during that time to make my audio run smoothly?

Heat changes in the electronics is possible. It usually works the other way though that the problem gets worse, not better. If you leave it on for say 24 hours, does it still work ok then too?

what's your host? i get the same problem but it isn't ram related. sounds like your stressing your cpu. 512 MB isn't enought anyway, you may want to get more ram. maybe 1 or 2 gigs worth for what you are doing should do the trick.

i recomend you go for some corsair pc3200 value ram from newegg dot com.

What soundcard? What MIDI interface? Maybe a sync problem...

this sounds more like a cache problem. Untill the files are uploaded to ram there are some delays, crackles & so. After the cache file fills with audio stuff it works just fine. I had the same problems on most applications. Try making the swap file fixed size (say 768 or 1024 Mb) and see if that helps. If no change try to make the swap file on other HDD than you app start drive.
