that was about the scariest book I've ever read. I kept thinking, this would make a terrific film.
I was very disappointed

There is a Japanese movie from a few years ago called "the eye" that is quite original, and had one moment in particular made me jump - and I never get freaked by movies ;)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325655/

I agree with the Event Horizon recommendation. It was extremely intense in the front row of the theatre - but then again I think lsd might have been involved too!
:-o

Not so much of a horror, and it deteriorates a bit at the end, but last year's British '28 Days Later' was alsovery well done.

Once again...

Willy Wonka.

You're right. But it was the last film to host all those great actors in one place despite the abuse to the storyline.

That book is in my top 3 for Horror.

for real unnerving chills that make you shiver ages later then it's got to be:

the ring (original...ringu?)

the others

the vanishing (original belgium versh. not the sanitised hollywood remake... best/scariest ending *ever*)

the eye (one moment in particular scared the absolute bejezus outta me)

definitely checkout 'the devils backbone', spanish film (subtitles..oooh... ;)) by the guy who directed 'the others'. Quite, like, metaphysical dude, but darn scary too.

great to see 'the aphyx' get a mention! Chilling...

How about the Dr Phibes movies? Cheesy/hammy as hell but some really dark stuff in them.

i kind of grew up on british horror films (Hammer...yawn... :)) and some that scared me as a kid don't really do it now (The Ghoul anyone?) but there are still segments from those old portamenteau(sp) movies like Asylum and Monster Club that really hold up (jeez, can't remember the film but the one with the weird guy who could burn things with his spooky whistle or something. And what he did to the girl who mocked him... shit, getting a shiver sitting here now, over twenty years later... :-o :-o :-o )

What I'd like to see is some tracks posted influenced by horror flicks..

Maybe we should make a thread in the Music Cafe, eh?

Anything goes, as long as it pays tribute to a horror flick.

I kinda remember that competition, but I wasn't really listening to anyone's work at that time..I'll have to check em out.

How about something a bit more enduring than a contest?

Back to Scary Movies :scared:

Post

thought of another that's even on topic (kinda):

'The Shout' - John Hurt is a sound designer type (70s film so all reel to reels etc) fascinated by this guys (alan bates) claim to have learnt the terror shout, a scream so horrific it kills any living thing that hears it... unsettling and worth a watch.

Some of these partially cross over into sci-fi, I guess...but here goes:

-- The "Evil Dead" Series (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, Army of Darkness)...even though it went from cheap-but-genuinely-scary to slapstick comedy across all three. :D

-- "Five Million Years To Earth" (AKA "Quartermass & The Pit"): the giant horned fire-demon at the end used to scare the hell out of me when I was little.

-- "The Omega Man" (I saw this in Los Angeles when it first came out in 1971, as part of a double-feature with "THX-1138". Has an incredible score by Ron Grainer)

-- "Event Horizon", especially when played loud (kind of a cross between Alien and Hellraiser). The book was interesting too.

-- The first "Creepshow"

-- The first 2 "Alien" movies

-- The various good old Hammer horror films :)

-- There was a made-for-TV miniseries back in (I believe) the 70's called "Frankenstein: The True Story", which had a rather enjoyable reworking on the whole concept.

-- "Carrie" (I was probably the only person in the theatre who *didn't* jump at the end, though)

-- The first "Candyman"

-- "Manos: The Hands of Fate" & "Monster-a-Go-Go" (two classic MST3K's :D)

-- "Dark City"

-- "The Sixth Sense"

-- The 2 "Blade" movies

I'm sure I'm missing quite a few and will remember more the moment I submit this....

And don't even get me started with horror books: it would be impossible for me to list....there's just so many (I collect old vintage horror books from Robert Bloch (who wrote 'Psycho'), Fritz Lieber, Jr (one of my all-time favorites), Richard Matheson, Parke Godwin and Marvin Kaye (who's "A Cold Blue Light" would make an excellent horror movie IMHO, etc.). There's still quite a few of these that would make excellent new movies (as opposed to Hollywood's continuing tendency to recycle old movies again and again and again and...)

Post
