We're free to speculate based on what we know. It has been reported he had been battling depression and degenerative nerve damage made it difficult for him to perform. It's okay to discuss and talk about what might have happened, it's not necessary to police the discussion.
Speculate and comment; yes. Make off-colour comments like "Oooh, what a Lucky Man, he was.....a bullet had found him." in some sort of effort of humour; not really. A little respect would be nice.

This is what makes it hardest for me. I would hate to have the mind of someone who has lost so much of what they see as their worth that it's better to have no further existence at all.

There`s nothing unusual about a 71 year old man, for what ever reason, loosing the use of, or in a musicians case, the dexterity to play their instrument. Even if depressed about it, it's very unlikely they take their life because of it.

I didn`t buy it when depression was speculated to be the primary cause of Robin William`s suicide. It turned out to be a brain cell degenerative disease which was the primary catalyst.

There are millions of disabled people in the world who battle with life every day. People beyond retirement age don`t usually kill themselves when something like hand arthritis(nerve degeneration) disables them.

All i`m saying is, there must be more to this then just being depressed about the loss of his aged hand. Please don`t treat his death like a Hollywood gossip story.

Lewy body dementia doesn't make you want to kill yourself either, you still have to be depressed about it.

Catalyst - a person or thing that precipitates an event or change:
His imprisonment by the government served as the catalyst that helped transform social unrest into revolution.

Yes? So don't use 'cause' and 'catalyst' interchangeably then.

I get where you're coming from, but respectfully, these are incredibly uninformed, naive statements.

People commit suicide all the time due to depression. I'm speaking of clinical depression. Being depressed (in the clinical definition) is not the same thing as feeling real sad or generally down in the dumps. Two completely different things.

This is so sad. I wish he would have been able to get help for his depression. He will be missed, and remembered as a one of the great synth pioneers.

More as great keyboardist than as a synth pioneer, but it will surely be remembered.

I've always thought of him as a synth pioneer in several respects. Not many people, even later on when synths became more prominent in music, took huge modular rigs onto stage tours and he was always willing to experiment with them musically. He was also producing original music fusing elements of classical and jazz with experimental synth sounds, his keyboard virtuosity and willingness to take musical risks enabled him to go into territory not many others got into back then.

Here`s more naive uninformed statements;
- He had been freaking out about not being able to perform well in a series of April concerts in Japan due to his worsening muscle/arthritis condition.
He was a drinker, he got drunk, he shot himself.

Nice email from Moog

"In general, everything we've ever done has always been in collaboration with musicians... there's constant experimentation. Keith Emerson was the first guy that really, in a professional way, took a large modular system on stage and made it work." - Bob Moog
