What do predict in 5-8 years for Apple, MOTU, Presonus Etc

I was just thinking down the line as far the the DAW market? Do you think Apple will still have Logic going? Maybe microsoft makes a DAW? Do you think these companies and products will still be around like Presonus-Studio One, MOTU, Ableton. Wonder what Native Instruments plan is with maschine. Your thoughts?

Apple seems not so interested in keeping older stuff going, their OSX version last barely two years.

Firewire is a dead standard now, new HDDs doesn't ship with that interface anymore.

They have given Logic a bump of late by including Alchemy, but if that doesn't improve earnings, they'll probably settle on Mainstage as their main DAW.

I mean, why would they want to make it complicated for their users, when they can make it simple

Microsoft are not likely to make a DAW. Not enough money in it. If they did want one, they'd buy a ready-made one, like Apple did.

I think 8 years from now everyone will have sold their music software and gone back to hardware so they can make music that sounds more real.

Honestly, I think 5-8 years from now, Presonus' aggressive marketing strategy will have worn thin on consumers (there's only so much we can see before we say enough is enough) and it comes back to bite them in the ash. That's the first thing I've ever said about their marketing. Ever.

Cubase will be still around and probably have some awesome features that other DAWs will have to catch up to. And it will still crash consistently.

Sonar could do the same thing as Cubase minus the crashing, but they recently just made a big deal of an add-track manager module. So that could go either way.

While we're on the subject of Sonar, I honestly predict that the subscription thing will be more wide-spread within the next 1-2 years, but then after about two years, it'll go the way of Firewire and AOL instant messenger in sense not that there's something better, but that no one will be doing subscription anymore when they realize that there's still a vast majority of people who buy perpetual licenses.

I predict that one of the DAWs of today will be gone within the next 5-8 years. But then there will be probably be 1-3 new ones.

I don't believe I'm responding to this, but facts are in order; perhaps Apple did purchase eMagic, at least partially, to round out iLife back in the day with Garageband. Subsequently, however, they've beefed up their Pro apps (Final Cut being the other major prong) and the two are the largest grossing apps on the App Store. The distribution model's cost structure is insanely low.

GB for the iPad added Live Loops, their session view of sorts, and similar to Alchemy being released in GB first, the same might happen in Logic.

Logic is the #2 DAW in the world behind Ableton according to many polls, though they are the front runners on Gearslutz with Cubase.

Big name artists and virtually every music studio has logic in the house, and Apple strategically might actually plan to expand ancillary businesses with the world wide slow down in HW sales.

In 2015, Apple was alone in having top line revenue grow in computer sales. No windows player increased sales across the board.

The iPad Pro has been released, and many are calling for Logic to be included on the device. It is for Pro Apps so the value prop goes.

The list of bug fixes has been extensive in the past few releases. Artistic Apps are part of the legacy of Steve Jobs. Apple Music + a professional music studio is akin to Sony having had tried breaking into this market with ACID many years ago.

The only player near the size of Apple in the whole marketplace is Cubase / Nuendo, as Yamaha (Japan based, slightly bigger than Apple) is their parent. I'd be worried about players who do not have the financial resources and/or wherewithal from dropping out of the marketplace, not players who have more cash than the GDP of smaller countries.

There's already talk on Gearslutz as to whether or not there will indeed be another free point release or if Logic will, in fact, next release 11. Compliance with Metal Graphics will ameliorate many of the alleged on screen GUI lags & multicorp support will only improve.

Doubt it -- Logic sells Macs and keeps them in studios, and easy transfer to Mainstage (I assume -- don't have it) will keep the Apple logo at all them shows.

And development on Logic has been accelerating the past year+, with better skins for the built-in utilities, iPad integration, Alchemy and the auto-drummer thing.

Compare and contrast with one of their other "Pro" apps, Aperture, which languished for two or three years before having its plug pulled in 2014. (Of course I use Aperture for all my photo stuff so... god dammit Apple)

I don't know what sort of outright sea change would end up in Logic but I do expect them to finish the UI refresh throughout the rest of the plugins and iPad stuff -- the compressor screen on the iPad looks great and I'd look forward to seeing the rest of the plugins take advantage.

It's a shame about Aperture... now that Lightroom is going subscription only I need a replacement

Logic is solid, an industry standard that drives hardware sales and they have been putting too much effort into it for it to disappear. Same with Final Cut Pro
