An audio interface I'm considering has 2 balanced 1/4" outputs only (and a headphone port). I would like to connect both a pair of M-Audio monitors (has XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs - no subwoofer out connector) , and an active sub (which has RCA inputs).

Basically, what options are there for splitting the signal so I can run the sub and monitors from a pair of stereo 1/4" TRS outputs?

Or am I better off just getting an interface with more outputs?

I doubt that bodging a sub into your system is going to help the accuracy of your monitors. I would recommend getting a sub and monitors designed to work together.

Fair comment I guess! But suppose that I wanted to do it anyway, for the purpose of just listening to music and gaming etc. rather than mixing anything using it. Is there an easy way to do it?

FWIW, I think I've set up in a fairly subtle way that I feel just extends the bass a bit rather than rattling the room. The monitors are 5" and are a bit lacking in lower bass. It's just a flick of a switch to turn the sub off anyway

Extra outs are probably the best option, but I have hooked subs to the control room out on my mixer before. That makes it easy to take them out when accuracy is needed. But if you don't have a mixer, it would be cheaper to get a better sound interface.

OK thanks, yes that is what I'm starting to conclude. Looking about I think there is one or two companies making suitable splitters (I found some on a German supplier site) but with the cost of those I think it would be just as well to get an interface with extra outputs to start off with.

it's never wrong to split a signal DIY AFAIK.
The cable is called a mult and you can buy it, without soldering anything.
AFAIK, only mixing requires an engineered box,if u want to go this route.

** I see you maybe don't, but, sure, the cable is very cheap

Thanks, that looks perfect. I found this version which is a double stereo adaptor, which presumably will retain a balanced signal to the monitors?

No ... the outs on your interface are 2 x 1/4 inch jacks yeah? That makes them two mono outputs (so far as connections go). 2 x mono = stereo.

The connector you linked to is designed for stereo 1/4 inch connections (like headphone outputs). It could be used to convert one headphone out into two.

Yes they are 2 x 1/4" jacks, but I understand they are balanced outputs:

OUTPUT jack (combined balanced TRS/unbalanced TS) - Hot (Tip), Cold (Ring), Ground (Sleeve).
