Mate, I really like your Synth1 patches. Thanks for that. It's a lovely sounding thing that Synth1.bwwd wrote:I hate that synth1 64 bits is not compatible with 32 bits version and doesnt recognize system to swap into 32 bits and vice versa, i have 64 bit and 32 bits system , when im on 32 bit system and reopen project with synth1 saved on 64 bit machine then it says 64bit version is not compatible, and its empty track whre synth1 should be.
synth1 doesnt sound like nord, gui is similar tho.sounds better IMO, nord sounds like cheap plastic.

I'm sure the people who originally programmed many of "his" patches thought they were good too.....

This was the first synth (and one of a few) I clicked with to the point where I went on a streak almost obsessively programming tons of patches. Leads, Basses, Pads, Percussion, Stabs and Effects.. it is so easy to get usable results out of it. I learned soo much with this synth when it comes to bread and butter patching. And not too complicated to get overwhelmed. Nice balance.
But yeah the filters that come with it do kind of stink for this day and age.. so I don't use it anymore. I find it is an excellent soft synth to learn subtractive synth patching though.

it's filters seem better suited for pads and leads. bass not so much. TAL synths do great basses but not as good leads and pads as synth1 so there you have it.

Synth1's filters are nothing like a Nord Lead's. Just watch some Youtube videos, and it's obvious. Overall i would say the Nord Lead sounds warmer too, and a lot more beefy. Synth1 sounds a bit strawy, and thin. Not "bad", but there's soft synth which sound much better. Sylenth1 for example is alike, but has better filter, oscillator and unison sound. Don't get me wrong, for beginners, and people who don't want to shell out much money, it's a great synth, and you can do a lot with it. But generally, you'd probably have to work on it more to get it to sound "fat" and full, than with other soft synths.

Just wondering, have you used a Nord Lead ? Telling people to listen to YouTube as some gauge of warmth and beefiness ? YouTubes compression rates are horrific on audio, so it is like listening to a Nord recorded on a dictaphone.chk071 wrote:Synth1's filters are nothing like a Nord Lead's. Also comparing a free plugin to another fairly expensive plugin is a bit strange too, it is kind of like me saying "well yes synth 1 is not bad, but there are orchestras that sound much better, just listen to the LSO" while i am being extreme here, that is pretty much the same thing.
But lets get right to the "About any hardware synth should actually sound better than Synth1. Would be quite disappointing if it didn't when you shell out a couple of hundred Euros."
Do you live in some kind of fantasy land where all hardware synths magically sound amazing ?
A couple of hundred Euros on a hardware synth is not going to get you much hahaha, and the list of hardware synths that sound worse than synth 1 (At any cost) is 'Probably' much much larger than the list that does sound better.

Oh come on, not that argument again. You can tell very well how a synth sounds from YouTube videos. And that comparison with more expensive stuff didn't come from me, someone said Synth1 sounds better than a Nord Lead, which is, let's say, pretty brave to claim.
From this video for example (yes, it's an A1, not a NL 2), you can tell pretty well, the filter behavior, including resonance sound, the oscillator sound, the unison, and the envelope behavior:
Really, has nothing to do with compression or anything. If you can't figure out the general character of a synth from such videos, then you're simply deaf. Of course, fiddling around yourself with it, and creating your own sounds, and see what sounds the synth excels at is better still.

Maybe, but Synth1 probably has 1 or 2 features too that the A1 doesn't have. I don't see something extraordinary in the patches in the video. Most are pretty simple, and you could do them with one part on other synths.

My 'stranded on a desert island' opinion of Synth1, versus the alternatives,
is that I prefer using multiple instances of synth1, routed among linux effects,
over using any single commerial software or hardware synth.
There is an energy to great synth1 sounds, that I find lacking in the presets
of refined commercial products. I also find that same energy in some of the
oldy-but-goldy synthedit instruments. Maybe it's an inherant but unheralded
feature of a lower resolution sound? Give me Ultrasonique, Superwave P8
and freeby effects over Massive, any day!
Un-energetic warmth, flailing brashness, and song-on-a-stick presets
are not found in product advertisements, but that's often what ships as content,
in a lot of expensive, and much heralded products. Demos serve their purpose!
That said, a nice set of effects, some dumb luck, and learning from experts,
will go a long way to creating music worth hearing twice, regardless
of the instrumentation available.

Soo anyone else have an opinion of Synth1 vs NL or similar HW? Synth1 does have a very unique feel I mean I've tried and owned a lot of synths and this one stands by itself (just like Juno's did,) and really doesn't sound analog but digital in a great way. A HW version would be really cool. wouldn't something around Raspeberry PI or Arduino be possible?

No. But i always wondered why such a function would be relevant anyway, if the synth engine isn't the same, and the parameters aren't identical either.Numanoid wrote:izonin wrote:Isn't Synth1 loosely based on a Nord Lead? Can Synth1 import Nord Lead sysex data like disco dsp Discovery ?EvilDragon wrote:Yes, it is.
