I'm spec'ing a new PC for myself and have been looking through the archives here at KvR (& others) for tips.
So far I'm looking at:
- ASUS P4C800-E deluxe mbo
- 3.2GHz Pentium 4 (haven't selected a fan yet)
- 2xKingston 400DDR 512Mb
Now I'm looking into Hard drives and I'm confused by the use of IDE and SATA. I notice that a lot of the ready made audio PCs come with an IDE for the OS and a SATA for the audio. (I intend making the system disk dual boot audio/non-audio as suggested elsewhere in this forum).
The thing that puzzles me is why do people go for an IDE and a SATA instead of two SATA drives? Are there advantages/disadvantages or can't SATA drives be set up as boot devices?

Sata needs a disc (you know .. those 1.44Mb, 3.5") when you install windows. Just like when you install raiddrivers if you want to boot from such a system.
Its not that hard though .. go with Sata all the way!

I haven't done an install with a SATA drive yet, but he's probably right. What you'll need to do during setup is on the VERY first screen that turns blue (right when setup starts, not the BAD blue screen of death), continue to press F6. It will ask you shortly after that if you'd like to install a 3rd Party controller driver. Say yes, and direct it to the appropriate media. Since all the OS's now predate SATA coming out, none of them are going to have drivers built in to the OS to automatically start. Is it tough? Hell no. Just need the disk and know how to read directions from your motherboard as to where the SATA drivers are during OS installation. If you don't install the drivers, you'll most likely get a blue screen of death with a STOP 0x0000007e BOOT_DRIVE_NOT_ACCESSABLE error, then you start from scratch again.

That's odd.
I never used a special installation disk to install my STAT-drivers. Just installed them from the CD that came with my mainboard using the "install new hardware" options in Control Panel.
Works like a charm.

Of course, if I had actually read the thread, I'd have understood that this isn't possible if you want to use the SATA-drive as a boot disk.

Heh, I haven't got floppy nor cd/dvd in my computer
But I guess I'd plug a cd in (haven't got any fdd lying around any longer, haven't used floppies for many years now) if I had to during a clean install.Stefan H Singer

Maybe you have a new xp disc or your motherboard support that .. didnt know that.

Thinking about it, I think I know where the problem lies with this issue.
If you are booting off of the RAID SATA controller, you WILL need the driver. If not, SATA is 100% backwards compatible with EIDE, and might be treating the SATA controller like an EIDE controller, and continuing with the install. Again, haven't done this, but would like to learn something new today as usual.

So will it be straightforward to create a dual boot system disk (both XP) on a 'regular' SATA drive? How do I do that; anyone any ideas? Partition Magic? (I've never installed XP before).
