Hmm. I only tested with Zebra so far, but I couldn't get it to respond to either polyphonic aftertouch or voice per channel pitch bend. Not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Zebra does not support polyphonic after-touch or voice per channel pitch bend. Ace, Bazille, Hive, and Diva claim to support this. I have tested Bazille and Hive with great results. If you don't have them, you can download the demos to see how they work

Zebra supports polyAT, but not note per channel. Probably would have to use the seaboard in regular keyboard mode to use polyAT.

I haven't got it to work with the Roli. I'll try drawing in the automation this evening and see if it actually responds. My experience in Bitwig is that AT only works with the highest note played. That could be a Roli or Bitwig issue though.

MPE controllers, when in MPE mode, send channel aftertouch as the Z axis (pressure), since each note is supposed to be on a different channel. But Zebra doesn't accept that. So by default yes I think the seaboard would be sending channel aftertouch and it would respond to one message only. I don't have a seaboard but my guess is that if you change the mode out of channel per note to normal keyboard mode and make the pressure send polyAT rather than channel AT, then Zebra should respond fine. I've drawn automation with the pressure modulation per note and Zebra polyAT targets modulate appropriately.

I'll play around with the U-he synths some more tonight. I have all of them except for ACE.

I wonder if what's happening with after-touch in Zebra for you is because of Bitwig, and might be different in Cubase?

This appears to answer all of my questions re: Zebra2, Cubase, and a ROLI Seaboard:

It's looking more and more as if I'll be picking up Cubase and a RISE soon(ish).

Well, I wasn't able to get the same results in Zebra. Depending on various settings, I can get some either poly aftertouch or pitch bend, but not both at the same time. Same with Diva. Hive and Bazille I was able to get working.

Bottom line: MPE is NOT yet fully supported by U-he synths. It probably will be eventually. In the meantime, I'm just not going to obsess over it. I'll take full advantage of any synths that I can get working with it, and the rest I'll just use in a more limited, traditional mode of operation for now.

Yeah, sorry I have been obsessing about it. It's just that Zebra2 is my favorite synth. :)

I'll leave it alone for now. I may pick up a RISE and a Komplete Kontrol and just be done with it.

Is there a list of instruments that are compatible with the RISE? It would be so awesome if Vienna Instruments PRO was.

There is a list on this page:

However, Omnisphere works but only in a very inconvenient way. I just tested Kontakt for a brief moment last night, and it seemed to have a maximum pitch bend range of 12... At least inside of Bitwig, that range is reduced by half, and I can't do accurate bends. I think there must be something I'm doing wrong there. I did confirm that both Aalto and Kaivo work. On a lot of synths the bend range is stored in the preset instead of being global, so as I was flipping through presets, I was constantly having to correct the bend range. Clearly these are still early days.

Yeah, I'm sure as the popularity of controllers such as these rise, more and more instruments and hosts will adopt these standards (once they have set standards). It can just be frustrating in the beginning to have such a limited number of fully-compatible tools to work with, and some that you really, really, really want to work with aren't compatible, or at least, in the manner in which you'd like them to be.

More than likely, I'll be getting one of these in the next month or two. I just need to pay off a couple of other purchases, first.

It would be nice if, instead of pitch-bend in Kontakt on, say, a guitar or bass, you could do a slide. :)

Slide is implemented by having a large pitch bend range. I'm going to investigate that further with Kontakt in standalone mode, and also see if scripting can do anything to extend the maximum bend range. There just aren't enough hours in the day...

It's easy with Kontakt, you just add more pitch bend modulations. 4 will give you the 48 range you need.

Great tip, thanks! :)
