Li-ion batteries

Been pondering using li-ion batteries in a couple of projects for convenience. Maybe I've been reading too many DIY bluetooth speaker Instructables but seems like a cheap option (charging boards for next to nothing from China, already have a couple of old laptop batteries I may be able to plunder...)

All positive till I read the stories about them exploding if wrongly charged etc.

Anyone used them in this way or a fools errand, best to left to those of a more daring nature?
