Black Octopus teams up with Timevan Studios for a truly insane collection of classic drum machine samples. Quite possibly the most comprehensive and complete sample pack of its kind, this is a full on expedition into the realm of classic drum machines. You like 909 Bassdrums? Good – we have 63,000 of them. Not only is virtually every combination of settings explored, all the sounds have been run through a variety of highly sought after analog gear. During the creation process of this pack, a wide multitude of glitch, noise, and analog dirt sounds appeared using certain combinations (such as the Sherman & Schippman filter) and you can bet all of these sounds have made it into the pack. Many gems are scattered throughout the packs enormous library of 300,000+ sounds. The samples are logically labelled with which analog processors have been used for convenience. All this for an absolute bargain at $20!
From TimeVan Studios:
Each analog drum sound comes directly from the it’s classic original, wall warts and all.
Both master and discreet instrument output of each unit are tested and used where possible, along with both accented and unaccented drum hits to maximize the variance among transients and analog waveforms. The maximum db the unit will output without artifact is carefully tested and chosen (in some instances the artifacts were kept just for SchitzUntGiggles).
The sounds then hit the tubes and transformers of our UAD and Chandler preamps and are captured in exquisite 176KHz detail by the Apogee Rosetta so as not to miss a single piece of harmonic nuance. This is to later help efficiently and politely reduce down to 44.1KHz with as little detail loss as possible for the final product. …Hey you can get the 176KHZ ones too, if you’re interested (http://www.timevanstudios.com)
The sounds are then painstakingly separated and routed via SSL’s xpatch in different combinations through a battery of classic european analog filters (Sherman, Schippman and Mutator) and analog post processing. Including the UBK Fatso, API 550eq and the legendary Mullard and Philips tubes of the Thermionic Culture Vulture 11th anniversary edition. The unit settings are even kept in the filenames, To deliver the widest most comprehensive sample set of these classic pieces yet.
We then lovingly normalize the entire 300Gb set to -13db and finally rounded down to ye olde 44.1KHz to make it manageable.
Whew……I’m exhausted, how about you?………..Smoke?

Man, I'm on the fence about this. It seems obviously worthwhile for $20, but I have some issues.
I'd like to know the folder structure of samples. And it sounds really good when they say they were recorded from all-original hardware and processed with interesting/good hardware. But how do the samples sound?
I'll be patiently waiting for some feedback on these before I can purchase them. Maybe Black Octopus can release some demo content for this..

Both great questions,
Due to the size it has been broken down into 17 zip files, so there will be a small amount of legwork to get all the files.
I have tried to retain as much of the file structure as I could while breaking it down into the smaller zips but have also included a document of the recommended folder structure once everything is extracted. With some simple copy and pasting you should end up with something like this:
1 BD
As for free samples we actually have posted up a few free sounds on our free page here from the 505, 606, and 606: http://blackoctopus-sound.com/free-downloads/
If you want to try any more specific sounds just let me know. The 808 and 909 sound quite nice but didn't make it in time for the teaser. You can see how the sounds range from clean to heavily effected through the filter bank and culture vulture for example. Due to the absolute insane amount of samples (yes we are aware 300,000 might be a bit overkill
) there are bound to be a few errors, clicks, glitches etc.. but overall the majority of the sounds are quite delicious.

What's the logic behind having 60,000+ 909 bassdrum samples? Honestly, I'm just curious.
At 1 second a piece, it would take nearly 17 hours of continuous listening just to audition all of those 909 bassdrum samples.

We realize the amount of samples in this pack is fairly insane and yes you probably won't end up going through all of them.jsp1979 wrote:What's the logic behind having 60,000+ 909 bassdrum samples? Honestly, I'm just curious.

The amount of samples comes from basically going through every combination of sound, and then run through various processors. For example imagine the 909 kick which has 4 knobs - this by itself yields thousands of combinations - then imagine running all of those combinations through chains like:
Chandler pre-amp with different saturation settings
Chandler pre-amp and then Fatso with different gain settings
UAD Twinfin with different gain settings
Etc...
As you can imagine this grows the library quite huge. Part of why the pack is only $20 is because we simply would not have the man hours to go through and trim down to the best samples and decided to keep everything intact. If you have the HD space it is definitely a nice feeling just picking a random sample out of the thousands and finding it to be a real gem that chances are nobody else has used
We would love to one day put the sounds together in a Kontakt or Reaktor instrument for easier use, but at this time we don't have any Kontakt developers.
Ps I have asked the guys at TimeVan to put together a new free pack which showcases more of the 808/909 so be on the lookout for that soon!

This library would greatly benefits from a Kontakt script or some kind of plugin interface to use all these samples in a sensible and efficient way.

Perhaps, but then I suspect it wouldn't cost $20 any more... although I don't really care about that now since I am currently downloading it.... so,uhm, yeah.SampleScience wrote:This library would greatly benefits from a Kontakt script or some kind of plugin interface to use all these samples in a sensible and efficient way.
