Hi,
here is my mix. Was not easy. Struggled with low end and how to get the mix to be warm without mud.
I'm happy with how the middle part were the snare comes in turned out.
I like the music of this track.
I will leave some more info later.
Good luck to all.

Nice song, good material to work with in general, but hard to mix sometimes.
About the mix I tried to use a lot analog sims to achieve the sweet sound from then, but also to maximize bass and the beat and keep some clarity on the modern side... As always I used a console sim from sknote (ssl mode), a lot tape sims everywhere and some tubes, with wow and flutter sometimes cranked up to give more life and dirt to the sound, I distorded a bit the bass at the intro to give more grit. Put the kick and snare of the slow part are goinginto a reverb to blend better with the slow loop, but also to give a trail to the snare. I had to use heavy EQ, compression, transient, saturation on the house kick, some resonance to boom on subs and some thump to kick through laptop speakers. bass and instruments are sidechained with the kick. and a gentle parallel compression on the mix buss to glue a little bit without overcompressing.
A good luck to everybody !

Hey everyone!
I wasn't sure how to mix this song or what to do in terms of 'sweetening' but i gave it a try.
I also had trouble uploading the wav file. Trying now for the fourth time..
Anyway here's the mp3:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3oJ-m ... sp=sharing
Enjoy!
Edit: I re-exported my mix as a flac and managed to upload. Here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hhjgsxua30ory ... .flac?dl=0

Just in the nick of time... What a fun song to mix! I stuck with the 90's club feel with a bit of an updated sound. Not a whole lot of crazy fx but a lot of automation. I hope you like it

Hi guys (and girls), I don't know what time is it in the places you live, but here in Spain it's almost 11 am, so a great hour of the day to start working!
Here I have my little evaluations about all the 18 songs you have submitted.
Dadayance: A bit static in the middle part. Love the kick and clap processing. It sounds really vintage. Is this already mastered?
Photonic: Great overall volumes and EQs, fx gating. It's maybe too similar to the original mix. A lot of FXs, the reverbs sound good. The end sounds great.
ykon28: Little volume in the pianos and strings, it's like it's just drums and bass. I would like more sound in the song. The high cut in strings sounds great, but a bit too much. The middle part (the slow part) sounds a bit dead. The drums sound amazing and very powerful. I managed to fix it by "mastering" (EDM Mastering chain, a lot of compression), but the mastering isn't supposed to fix a mix.
thiagoam88: Just like ykon28, the drums are very loud compared to the piano and the rest of pads. In my opinion, the piano is as important as the bass line, so I would try to put them in the same volume. The FX playing is great, but the middle part is also very dry and little sounding. The drums EQing is good, but it sounds very modern, and the crashes and FX tracks are also a bit loud. The last note in the strings track is there, and is a bit inharmonic for the song key, so I would have removed it.
wavetone: The bass delay is a bit confusing, because it's an element that establishes the key and chords in the song, and that FX with that delay length mixes the keys between beats (I don't know if you understand me
. It also has too much bass and too little high content.
camsr: Great overall balance, but too similar to my mix, too dry and not creative. It really sounds like old.
vasdim: Sounds good, great volumes. The snare in the slow part is too dry, it sounds like if it was out of the mix. The panning and stereo FXs are cool.
woung717: The piano reverb really creates a good ambient. Great old school sound, I think. Maybe the best slow part I've heard. In the transition from the slow part to the verse, there is a strange fast filter jump in the saw pad that should be fixed. Too much bass.
Kolyev: You've been creative in the intro
and in the song in general. Good balance, volumes and overall feel of the song. The reverse kick is very cool. It doesn't sound too old-school, the drums sound very modern.
electricthing: The bass is a bit low in volume. Good general feel. The saw pad sounds amazing!
The panning in the slow part is a bit confusing, I'd change it.
Davias: Very powerful mix, I love it. It also sounds "vintage". Maybe the kick has too much click. The snare in the slow part sounds great too.
G_Liou: Sounds very clean and organized, I love it. The slow snare's attack sounds a bit loud and clicky, but the rest of it is good, it may need more FX and creativity without destroying it's overall balance.
Gamma_ut: Everything sounds like filtered in a weird way in the verses, I don't know how but I don't really like it (phasing?) The slow part sounds like overcompressed at first (?), but then it sounds amazing. The overall volumes are great. A dark mix in general, and I like it, but that filter thing is a bit annoying. Mastered?
davemcisaac: Too much smiley-EQ type in the master, it sounds too modern-bright. I love the clap with that reverb. The slow part is also good.
mwaudioprod: Sounds great. Maybe too much pumping? Good usage of the FXs, I love the slow part.
NickGeorge: Too much bass in the kick, very bright drums, too similar to my mix. It sounds good in general. The slow part is a bit boring.
So there you are, a bit short but that is all, the mixes are great in general. I chose the ones who sound better, more vintage and/or more creative, and the ones which I think can get better in the 2nd round! And the mixers who go to the next round are:
Dadayance
Photonic
vasdim
Kolyev
Davias
G_Liou
Gamma_ut
mwaudioprod
Thanks a lot everybody for participating!

Yep, I like the pumping effect, but maybe you could make it less audible, more subtle.mwaudioprod wrote:Hi Jorgeelalto, cool I have come to the next round! I will make then the pumping less, or?

Thanks for putting it through to the second phase. Can you help me debug this filtering thing? There's no stereo enhancement or anything like that on the master, so I want to check whether this is "everything" or just on a sound that's more apparent in certain places.Jorgeelalto wrote:Gamma_ut: Everything sounds like filtered in a weird way in the verses, I don't know how but I don't really like it (phasing?) There is a phaser on the mid/upper frequencies of the bass that was designed to bring out some of the grain – and that's my most likely candidate for this but it could also be one of the reverbs, which, to emulate the behaviour of old Alesis-style reverbs has a series of comb filters on the input - though this should be fairly apparent on the snare in the slow section if anywhere.

For sure. I think it's a combination of the FX in the bass and the equing in the piano that gives a comb-filtered character to the mix in the chorus (the principal part of the song, not the FX). The rest of the song doesn't have it. The keys without any processing have already a comb-filtered sound - in fact, Compyfox and I thought that there was a problem with phasing, but the sound (it's an M1 piano from the Digital Synsations from UVI) is like that.Gamma-UT wrote:Thanks for putting it through to the second phase.
