Minor PC upgrade suggestions

I am thinking of a minor PC upgrade to make best use of programs such as BFD, Sampletank. I am looking at the Gigabyte GA-7VT600F mainboard with the possibility of a new CPU when I can afford it. I am hoping the 400mhz ram will improve performance. Anyone have any knowledge of this motherboard or better suggestions.

You say minor, eally what you're going from and to. I tend to stick to Asus boards only these days.

Thanks Devon. I currently have an ASUS. No problems. Any particular reason for sticking to ASUS. Have you found Giga not so good?

Mostly because I've never had any problems, my friends have never had problems, and I never hear anyone bitch about Asus for the most part, for many years really.

My last 2 have been ASUS without problems. The guy in the store just told me what the Gigabyte board had and it sounded like it would be fine. I suppose I should stick to what I know. It is pretty tough to select the RIGHT mobo from the 6,000,000,000 available. I'm in way over my head when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for your help.

I've used Intel, Asus, MSI, ABit, and a few others, and I tend to return to Asus. I had a dead floppy controller with the ABit that I had to return (I had 2 other friends with the same model that had other 'weird' problems with their board too, we all bought around the same time), and the MSI fried quickly too, having to be replaced, and even the replacement has problems.morelia wrote:My last 2 have been ASUS without problems. Another plug sor Asus.
If you don't fux0r it by using too much force on the ZIF-lock (1), it's rock solid. But you are using a P4, so that would't be a problem.
I can't see how you could do better short of getting a Tyan dual AMD64 board, but that wouldn't be a Minor Update (2).

I've got two ASUS motherboard up here. Anywas, some things I don't like about ASUS and in particular these boards:
1. Most of the times ASUS is cranking up the FSB a little bit further than default (to look better in benchmarks). This applies to both boards I'm owning. For instance, setting the FSB to 133 MHz will result in 134 MHz.
2. Also, most of the times ASUS is cranking up the default voltage for the processor and RAM. This again applies for both boards I own. You can imagine that processor and RAM are getting more hot than they should.
3. ASUS tends to show temperatures a little higher than measured. ASUS has even admitted this... the reason was to let people buy sufficient cooling.
4. Sometimes ASUS is very late to release a board with a new chipset. Okay, no problem, because we don't want to have garbage released. BUT if all other manufacturers have already released such kinda board, it's hard to wait for ASUS.
These are not really big problems; the boards will work fine anyhow. The older ASUS board I own has always worked flawlessly. But now with the newer board I've gotten... it has really weird spontaneous reboots.. still figuring out if it's really the board.
I was a little bit surprised to see the ASUS A8V board not performing on par with its competitors. A revised version is on the way. What happened to ASUS?
Especially number 4 got me buying an MSI Athlon 64 board. I was not really favouring MSI, but I've read some good reviews and didn't want to wait. Now, I'm very glad I didn't wait for the ASUS K8N-E, because it misses all kind of BIOS settings I would like to see.
Admittedly, I liked ASUS, but today, my strong feelings for ASUS have gone a bit away...
To add, I'm very very happy with the MSI K8N Neo FSR board I've gotten!

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like it probably does not matter which mobo I get. There are so many so just pick one with the features you are after and take your chances sort of thing.
I am not even sure what performing is with a mobo. I mean I know everything plugs into it but I would not know if a problem I was having was related to the quality of the motherboard or the colour of my desktop. I can handle the software in most cases but I need a course on hardware I think. Anyway as it is an AMD I use I think I will just go for it and buy the above mentioned. The mobo is the cheapest part of the setup anyway. A gig of ram is about 3X the cost. Thanks again y'all. Just to say that I'm happy with my MSI mobo. I've got my CPU and RAM overclocked to bits (as well as the latencies of my RAM cranked super low) using the BIOS, and it purrs along happily.
