Looking to compliment reason with VSTs

Okay, so I'm a diehard reason fan. I'm not gonna go into why I love it, but suffice to say I'm not interested in leaving it for the world. But at the same time, I realize that the synths in Reason just don't cut it compared to VSTs. So now I'm looking to have another program that I can use in conjunction with reason to play VST synths.
I was figuring to just use cubase, but the problem is cubase gives me terrible lag when I'm fudging around with my midi keyboard trying to sort out good riffs. The standalone Chainer program lets me play pretty much everything sans lag so I'm pretty frustrated as to why cubase is being so cranky about it.
Regardless, right now what I'm stuck doing is loading up Chainer with Vanguard, then loading up Reason, and recording the midi inputs into the reason sequencer while Chainer also receives the input and plays the keys through Vanguard giving me my drooly amazing synth sounds.
Now ideally what would be perfect is figuring out a way to trick Reason into feeding that recorded midi info back out to Chainer when I play it back, but I'm 99% sure this is impossible.
So what I'm having to do now is quantize and fix all my riffs up in Reason and export them as a midi file, then close everything, load up cubase, reload up reason as a slave, open my song in reason and then load the midi file into cubase into a channel with Vanguard.
Obviously I don't have to tell you this is such an extreme pain in the ass it's not funny. So what I'm looking for is either a way to sort the latency issues I'm having with Cubase (since I'm not having any of these issues ANYWHERE else) or if someone can tell me of a sequencer program with a similar look to Reason's sequencer that'll let me either feed midi to Chainer or let me play general VSTs live without lag.
I imagine this may have been gone over many times, but I spent the last hour searching the site for something and have gone through 10 programs which either don't do what I'm trying to do or are so complex I couldn't get it to work regardless. Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks
Ryan

I rewire into Tracktion with no latency whatsoever. I'd try ithyperborea wrote:Maybe Tracktion is what you need
But at the same time, cubase should work fine for this. I'm sure thousands of people use it and Reason together. What version of cubase are you running? Maybe some cubase expert here can help.

I'm using Cubase SX 2.2
And my soundcard is an M-Audio Quattro so I agree I definately shouldn't be having this lag issue. Now a big reason I've stayed with Reason is that I really really hate Cubase's layout and can't sort anything out from it. So keep that in mind - there may be something really simple in some settings box that I can change that'll help me with my lag situations. But as it stands it's literally around a second of lag between when Cubase registers I hit the key and when it actually spits out the sound.
I was using ableton 4 for a bit since that's what we use in conjunction with reason for running our live shows, but it's not very stable with the VSTs I want to use, it crashes eventually every time. Plus I absolutely HATE ableton's midi sequencer.

are you using the m-audio asio driver in cubase?
I just installed sx last night, and am having no latency problems with my audiophile 2496.

ok... sx 2.2 should work fine.
do your vst synths in cubase have latency problems? if so, your cubase asio settings are to blame. if not, there is something screwy with Rewire on your computer and you may want to contact Steinberg and/or Propellerheads support.

Yep, sounds like an MME driver or something.
Cubase isn't very good at automatically picking up the best driver for you.

I've checked my soundcard settings using steinberg/asio/wpsetup.exe (the config tool usually in the Cubase start menu directory. It has my SBLive as being disabled and my USB Audio device (being my Quattro) enabled. But it's still giving me exactly the same amount of delay as when I had the other card running.

it looks like you should try out Orion Platinum.
Orion is easy to learn, yet very powerful.
and Orion and Reason work together rewired very well and stable.
as usual : try the demos.

Seriously though, every time I come to KVR and look at all of the new VSTs, I just can't believe that there is an app. with such rave reviews that still doesn't support them.
It's a shame that the Props will apparently never support VST, as if this makes Reason somehow better. The idea that VST support couldn't be integrated into Reason is absolute and obvious rubbish.
Since so many Reason users do want to use VSTs, and preferably without having to open another program at the same time, I can't understand why other Reason users act as if the introduction of VST compatibility would destroy Reason.

Devices/Device Setup
Vst Multitrack
Make sure that you use the right asiodriver
It should not be Multimedia nor direct x, but (mine is) M-Audio Delta Asio
Switching sequenser to orion or tracktion wont help i guess

Orion isnt very good with ReWire whenever I have tried it. Not as a Slave anyway, which is how it would be used. You only get 5 outputs
(4 busses and 1 main stereo out)
