LogicPro 10.2.2
I have a desire and I'm trying to work out if it possible. If it is not I will create a solution.

I'd like to quantise the live automation of the tremolo plugin so that when I am fiddling with my knob assigned to the Rate value, it only settles on the values I choose, say no triplets or dotted values. Or only 1/128 and 4/1.

Looking at some Logic tech help videos, none of it hits anywhere near what I'm looking for, but I know it has hidden depths not often mentioned, so I wonder if any Logic gurus here know if this is even possible?

thanks! :)

I thought the Smart Controls might be tweak-able in this way, but they are not

You can open the event list with automation data and easily quantize everything in there, a key command can be assigned to open that list, I use cmd+alt+a.

Post

Ah, the ol' dirty method.. I'd forgotten about the EventList.

Thanks Simon

I'd still like a way to modulate the automation in pre-defined steps.

I wonder if it might be possible to hack something in the Environment.
Or may be I have identified a previously untapped requirement.
Oh look a poem!
Yeah, 'at'll show'em

You can also create a region which is e.g. 1/16th long, then use key command for “create nodes at region borders“, then copy that region x times.

Ah, this is a bit off-sky from what I was looking for; that's a linear time quantise, if I read it correctly. The quantise in the event list only quantises the position of the data, not the data itself.

Is there not a way to setup a controller to only hit certain automatable values?

Post

Sorry for misreading your OP, so you're basically looking for a data mapper, must be possible somehow.

No probs - exactly, I can bodge a crude one together in Bidule - I don't have time for elegance.
If I were a cleverer coder I might have had a go at using the Scripter Midi plugin. Maybe I'll ask a nerdy buddy later

Transformer objects in the environment let you create mappers of all kinds, so that's where the solution will be found.

Post

If I want to find the solution in Logic alone, I think you might be right.
It's a shame the 'Universal Map' isn't a bit more configurable - quantise of vertical and horizontal data would be cool

As it stands, this is the only way - drawing with my mouse!

Shame it doesn't re-size

scratch that - I found the Quantise condition, but it's functionality is still a bit crude for what I'm looking for.

Thanks for all your suggestions Simon :)

you can also marquee a selection of automation lets say a quarter bar in length and then shift click the line in the marquee and it becomes a straight line you can pull up and down similiar to ableton, then you can copy and paste and edit to your liking, very ez square automation waves.

Thanks qttheerearranger - yes this is good for offline automation drawing, however I am looking for a solution I can map to a midi knob, and remap the CC value to configurable ranges, depending on the target plugin.

In this project I had envisaged mapping a knob to the rate of Tremolo, and when that knob is wiggled it only moves between, for example, 1/4 and 1/16 - missing out all values between.

Midi Transform in Logic Midi Environment seems to be closest 'in-DAW' tool available to me (see previous post for example), it's just not resizable, and it is all drawn with a mouse, where I'd prefer to have configurable ranges. I've started building something in PlogueBidule I can slot in however I can predict a point, and a problem, when I will need to map a target parameter to a CC being fed through a remapper.
