So according to SOS, Steinberg first released the VST sdk in 1996.

That was 20 years ago.

Time goes by way too fast.

If I´m recalling it correctly then these were the first VST's ever. And hey, you can download them right now. :)

Wow. I had a feeling VST wasn't a particularly "new" invention, but I had no idea it was actually from around the mid-90s!

The oldest VSTs I still use are the mda bundle. Must be from some time during the late 90's. The multiband dist and bitcrusher still get the job done.

Vsts became better with age indeed, like fine wine.

I still use NI Pro53 which is the 3rd version of the Pro5 - I still have a copy of the original Computer Music mag where they reviewed the Steinberg Model E and Pro 5 side by side because they came out roughly the same time.

First VSTi's - VST effects came earlier.

Think these came out around late 1999/2000

Neon was the first.

Yeah but it was really a proof of concept demo instrument, Model E was the first fully developed commercial VSTi, along with the VB bass and drum that Steinberg also released.

Just makes me wonder if a vst also can be considered to be vintage same as hardware? ..if so I guess Model E should be considered to be vintage by now

Just tried Neon and VB-1 - great plugins even now!

So, basically VST's impact on music-making could be on par with the impact of amplification of instruments? Or even greater in the long run? Les Paul = Steinberg? Okay, I guess it might not actually be Les Paul? Too lazy to research it.
