Zebra Gravastar is a collection of 180 sounds for U-he’s Zebra2 synthesizer, aimed at cinematic scoring with a dark, organic edge.

The bulk of this soundset was originally designed for composer Jason Graves (Tomb Raider, Until Dawn, Dead Space) to use for his amazing score for Ubisoft’s Far Cry: Primal. Jason’s brief for the project was hilariously simple: “Imagine synthesizers as played by cavemen.”

Gravastar focuses on non-traditional synth sounds, inspired by more natural sonic character: wood, glass, rock, dirt, noise, distortion, resonance, light and fire.

The soundset is full of deep rhythms, shadowy pulses and ethnic loops, as well as ghostly textures, tectonic bass and luminescent pads. These sounds are alive and breathing; growing and evolving.

This collection particularly takes advantage of Zebra’s FM/noise oscillators, its comb filters and its advanced waveform options. Though devised through software and synthesis, Gravastar’s heart lies in the natural, the tribal, the environmental, the elemental.

Each sound has dynamic movement and options programmed into the modwheel and the X/Y pads, for further sonic exploration.

And some super demo tracks.

Gravastar also comes in a Dark Edition, with a further 180 sounds that take the original patches and re-interpret them in ZebraHZ. The expansion has a grittier, more analogue and electronic vibe.

Zebra Gravastar is available for £24.99 +VAT. The Dark Edition (which has all 360 patches) is £34.99 +VAT. Both will be released on Friday.

I'm interested. But I need to know which demo tracks are from which edition, as I don't have Dark Zebra.

Or maybe I should ask this - do you have any demo tracks that are ONLY from the standard/original/non-HZ 180 set? That way, I know what I hear, I can use! :)

I'd also like to know which demo tracks are ONLY Zebra2, as many seem to rely fairly heavily on reverb, and I'd like to know if it's Z2's reverb, or some outboard gear on the forefront sounds. So I'll know how close I can get to the sounds on the demos.

Thanks!

Hey SciFiArtMan.

If you look at the tracks in the playlist, you can see which version of the soundset was used by the artwork. Also, there are 'naked' versions of demo tracks that are the Zebra sounds only. And where there's no naked version of a track, it means the original version was Zebra-only.

I also ask my demo writers not to use any external processing that alters the sound of the presets they use in their demo, so uusally there is only a little mastering EQ and compression added.

Hope that helps.

This is extremely helpful! I thought I was asking a bit much, but didn't see the harm. And I'm so impressed that you considered the exact same questions, even presenting the nude files (many don't go nearly this far!). Now, I'm a little stuck deciding on which Zebra set I want to get (first)!

Gravastar has such good percussive sounds, but some of the other sets have sweet pads and soundscapes and such! Every one of them is a winner!

Thanks for all!

No worries. I like to offer good customer service where I can.

If you want to ask any specific questions about the soundsets (what might suit your needs best), feel free to fire me an email.

I'm starting to make more music in a gentle "new age" style. But also more EDM type sounds in a hard prog-rockish setting. And although my music has always had a good bit of cinematic feel (many were created as actual soundtracks) I also want to make even bigger more epic type orch-based tracks too (and Gravastar seems to fit that). Yes, I know I should pick a style and run with it, but...

So anything to help my soft new agey, electro-rock, cinematic epicness?

I'm going through all the regular (non-HZ) demos and scoring them for unique and useful sounds. Kronos has scored high, but Borealis and Luminaire have done well too :)

I must say I bought all of Josef Hollo's sets (and your set are wonderful too!), and have yet to fully explore them all. Hence, even more confusion than usual.

And here's what the man himself, Jason Graves, has to say about Zebra Gravastar...
