Vst turning 20? Really?!!?

As far as I know, Steinberg vst was the first attempt to create a "native" audio-midi plug in, that is why it is so important and "revolutionary". Pro-tools' plugins on the contrary could not work natively, they came with expensive hardware boards, and only worked in that closed "Apple + Digidesign Hardware" system only professional studios could afford. Nowadays, thanks to Steinberg, the same audio plugins and audio-midi sequencers are instead used by everyone: the studios and us (the mere mortals).
