How many plugins and virtual instruments should a computer be able to run at the same time?

If each person can give examples of what kind and how many they run it would help me know what I can expect.

I know the number depends on the set up and the size of the plugin but I am curios as to what you have to say.

the maximum ive ever used in a track was 45  but they were never all playing at the same time and some where used as just one sound here or there

on average including a few drums id say 12 is my regularish thereabouts figure but as you say it depends

Depends on the plugs

On my new system, I can easily run a track with the following

Reaktor Session
Phatmatik Pro
SampleTank2 (multitimbrally, probably 4-6 instruments)
Synth1
2 instances of z3ta+

and I am sure I am forgetting something

Plus a number or inserts and sends (ohmboyz, ambience, etc)

As Vurt said 8-12 is my average including multiple instruments in ST, + 4-6 fx but I just upgraded, so lets see how much this system can take

about 10 - 6 or 7 instruments, bit of verb, delay and compression, then crackle, pop, crackle, death.

My typical layout is:

Battery with a 70mb drum set
Sampletank with the Squids C70 yamaha piano and patches for tambourine, bongos and congas
A couple of Styluses
2-3 Atmospheres
1 or 2 Trilogies (depending on the movement of the piece)
B4 playing on 2 midi channels (1 chords, one solo stuff)
2 or 3 Amplitubes
and then SX's build-in compressors on up to 10 audio channels, EQ on all channels, one or 2 reverbs as master sends, a delay as a master send, and about 20-30% headroom.

Once I did all the above + a Reaktor with Virux Dreams and an Absynth and that was pretty much it for the processor. P4 2.53 GHz, 1MB ram.

It's loads of performance, I reckon as much as I need right now. But then, I'm mostly a sampler/rompler man. Synth-based people may need lots more.
Three shall be the number of the counting

And the number of the counting shall be three.

I'm surprised you even got that far with that amount of memory.

I have 8 copies of Classic Reverb in my KVR:Southport track, as well as Roomverb M2, Freeverb and some other plugins including a few Sonitus bits, Angelina, Phatmatik, TubiLeSax, Sync Modular and probably some other stuff I forget.

If I start hitting 75% on the CPU I bounce something down, so I never really keep track...

There´s nothing like the sound of silence run through 68 platinum verbs :P :)

I dunno.. try to keep my hands off synthedit plugs because they in general are hard on the CPU. I stick mostly to Hypersonic nowadays with 10-16 instruments + external effects such as Kjærhus Audio Classic series and Blockfish.
That way I limit myself alot of course by using a rompler, but it´s harder to run out of ressources on my Athlon 1800+ XP, which is more important for me than being able to use excactly the synth I want for my tunes, coz then I may need to bounce, and that´s creativity killer #1 for me. So I´ll wait till in 2-3 years when my dream machine can be bought for a reasonable price.
