All the best to KS.
Instead of Klaus, TD will play on the event.

Maybe not, but their latest releases With Ulrich Schnauss is some of their best of recent years IMOfmr wrote:Can we still call Tangerine Dream to a band where none of the original members is present?
Would be interesting if Chris Franke could make a comeback in the band, but he is probably to busy making schmaltz new age on his own

Nah, Chris Franke could never play with these kids. He belongs to another era, when electronic music had a completely different meaning.Numanoid wrote:[Would be interesting if Chris Franke could make a comeback in the band, but he is probably to busy making schmaltz new age on his own

I got into Tangerine Dream around '89 picking up a compilation, and then really into them when I got hold of Logos and Force Majeure in '94fmr wrote:Which doesn't mean much, does it?Numanoid wrote:Maybe not, but their latest releases With Ulrich Schnauss is some of their best of recent years IMOfmr wrote:Can we still call Tangerine Dream to a band where none of the original members is present?
Looking back, their best period is from about Stratosfear to Logos IMO, Quichotte and Logos being my favourites
Their worst period is about the same as Gary Numan, late 80's to mid-90s. Lily on the Beach is just a horrendous album for example.
I think they did return to form in the 00's and I look forward to following them with Schnauss as the main man

I like Stratosfear and Force Majeure too, but I don't like Logos that much. But I do like Tangram (a masterpiece, IMO) and Hyperborea. However, the best ones, for me, are undoubtedly, Phaedra and Rubycon - there's some magic in what they achieved with so many limitations, and the experimental vein is much more prominent in those albums.Numanoid wrote:I got into Tangerine Dream around '89 picking up a compilation, and then really into them when I got hold of Logos and Force Majeure in '94fmr wrote:Which doesn't mean much, does it?Numanoid wrote:Maybe not, but their latest releases With Ulrich Schnauss is some of their best of recent years IMOfmr wrote:Can we still call Tangerine Dream to a band where none of the original members is present?

I lost my interest in them after Chris Franke leave. It was no longer TD, IMO

I hope he is getting better, I just checked the site, and they had put up some free PDF newsletter during the last two weeks, so no big announcements

This link http://www.klaus-schulze.com/biograph.htm notes "Serious disease of KS. Since September convalescent" if you scroll down to 2005.
I don't know what to make of it either.
EDIT - also saw this on another site;
"Schulze experienced a health scare in 2008 which required him to cancel several scheduled performances. After recovering, he returned to touring for a while, but then announced in 2011 that he would do no more live performances due to ongoing health issues."

Hmm. no good news, hopefully he will get well very soon.
Btw. KS is IMO a mediocre musician, never liked his improvisations. Ulrich Schnauss is IMO miles ahead. There was a new album announced with TD and Schnauss "Quantum Gate" but I have never seen it in some stores like Amazon, I've only heard a preview on Soundcloud some month ago.

Reading what I wrote just above, it seems apparent KS has a progressive disease that has only gotten worse...[MS?]so he will not be getting better.4damind wrote:Hmm. no good news, hopefully he will get well very soon.

For me TD has always been about the 'atmosphere' not the musicianship.
On their best records and KS solo recordings, the musical synthesis, how they've created the contents of the cauldron and how the contents are mixed and stirred.

Anyway, let's hope the best for him. Hopefully it's not a incurable disease.annode wrote:Reading what I wrote just above, it seems apparent KS has a progressive disease that has only gotten worse...[MS?]so he will not be getting better.4damind wrote:Hmm. no good news, hopefully he will get well very soon.

I remember more some solo stuff Schulze made and it looks in the videos always if he had completely no idea what he is doing. He is moving some knobs and running a sequencer with a lot of repetitions and it's sounds always more like trial and error or if he is testing stuff.
He has not this trained piano playing craft as other artists and with Tangerine Dream he was Afaik "only" a drummer.
But also the newer stuff like "Shadowland" (2013), it's sounds always if he is improvising and has only very limited composing skillz. I never liked him as a electronic musician. It's sound often very boring after some minutes (and most of his track are _very_ long).
