Hope this topic doesn't already exist somewhere... though I've been stupid before and I'll be stupid again. ;)

OK, well lots of SF fans (not all) also tend to like Fantasy (either pure fantasy, which has little to do with wizards and elves and stuff like that), or "Swords and Sorcery" books that tend to get lumped into the Fantasy category.

For me, I'd like to see Elric of Melnibone turned into a movie. It would be successful either as a slightly divergent fanboy pisser-offer action film, or as a true-to-the-book exploration of an interesting character.

Some of Moorcock's other stuff is even more interesting, but not as film-friendly (ie. Blood).

So what are yours?

Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny

Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever - Stephen R. Donaldson

The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien

Shadow of the Torturer
Claw of the Conciliator .. you get the Gene Wolfe drift :)

The Silmarillion would be horrific as a movie. :D Thomas Covenant would be good.

Glen Cook's Black Company could be worthwhile.

Comics:
The entire Aleph Tau series.
Hmmm. treading the fine line between fantasy and scifi (and gnosticism).

And of course En Quete de l'Oiseau du Temps (1).
Because it is beautiful and deeply tragic.

Groet, Erik

(1) no idea what the English title is. (2)
(2) no, I don't read French, either. I had too look this up.
Pop music delenda est.

Thomas Covenant!!!

And, a little while ago I read a Tad Williams book called 'War of the Flowers' that would be great as a movie.

I guess the Hobbit would be fun, I hear Mr Jackson may be making it at some stage.

the less sci-fi / fantasy books they convert to the silver screen the better. for example, the lord of the rings. something I truly adored it in book form, beautiful & elegant. that beauty & elegance is raped, twisted, mangled for a Hollywood audience. I had the displeasure of seeing these films and I think they are one of the worst films I have seen..

I, Robot. I’ve only seen a making-off of this and I can already say that it holds no valid reference to the book by Isaac Asimov at all. If only because they bombarded Will Smith as the main character.

I understand that these two films are adaptations and that they need to be easy pieces to be fed to the Hollywood audience to generate enormous amounts of ca$h... but still I can not help but feel attacked when they rape my personal imagination with the Hollywood imagery.
Okay, I’m guessing it's already clear but I must stress the fact that I do not like Hollywood films at all.

There are some sci-fi / fantasy adaptations that I do like.

Anthony Burgess’ “A Clockwork Orange” by Stanley Kubrick
The ending of the movie is very different then the original ending of the book but Kubrick didn’t know the original ending. Still I think that it is a very faithful adaptation of the book giving it a very dark atmosphere.

Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001 – A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick
I think you need to have read the book to truly appreciate this adaptation but if you have it is one marvellous film.

Frank Herbert’s “Dune” by David Lynch
Not my favourite adaptation but I am just very fond of David Lynch films. Plus that he does stick with the story. Though just like with “A Space Odyssey” you do need to have read the book to make sense of the film, I guess.

Bleh, sorry for my ranting…

Pratchett.

Could be done terribly or well. I'm sure the former would happen. I would be enraged at the adaptations and wouldn't see them.
