Nope, wrong. There are elicenser and codemeter products that remain uncracked to this very day on either mac or win. (reason for example has not been cracked since V6, not even remotely).

Also on mac, most ilok remains safe.
Perhaps it is just a lack of interest/demand?

Most iLok products on Mac were defeated way before the PC. The bypass was not as elegant as it's currently on PC but it worked.

There's very few appealing products that use eLicenser and those have been widely available. Only interesting eLicenser using products I can think of are the Virsyn, Waldorf and XILS synths and they all have had protection circumvented. There's a few Steinberg's own products that have been safe but they are certainly not appealing. The last time I actually used any of the Steinberg products for something was probably at the time of Cubase 5. It was slow and unstable as hell. As it later turned out it was most likely because half of the codebase consisted of eLicenser wrapper. Recently I had a misfortune to upgrade some old Cubase 4/5 LE licenses in some places. When I fired it up the first time I was greeted with the stupid "can't run on Windows Classic theme" error and I immediately knew that it is still a total piece of sh1t. When I got it to run I was not dissapointed - still the same sluggish and archaic interface and it felt like 1990's all over again.

And who cares about Reason these days? It's 2016 and they are absolutely completely irrelevant niche player. I doubt anyone would even bother to crack them.

So, I am interested to demo Waldorf Largo Before purchase. It seems to be a great synth. The e-licenser however is not in the mood. The result is that I will not buy Waldorf Largo because this is exactly the kind of problems I don't need. This is a joke!

Xils-lab products mary diverse protection schemes, additionally to eLicencer ( Like timebombs used by other companies like U-he) As a consequence, a lot of surprises for users of w.rezed versions ...

Btw, I think naming companies in this thread who 'might have been' pir.ted is not a good idea, and especially coming from reps from companies, like FLS. ( So not for you robotmonkey) This thread should probably be moded at a moment or another.

And finally, my dongles work OK for ages now on all my systems. Never had a single problem, and certainly not a slowdown due to *dongle drivers*. My machines have hundreds of various drivers for various things, so it's no surprise, but well ...

I can understand people not wanting dongles for a number of reasons. Eveybody is free to have his own opinion about software protection. Promoting, or advertising, non legal software, or trashing competitive companies using g.Ogol *trends* is a bit different though imo ....

Did you install the latest updates on Windows 7? Is it a valid copy (of Windows)?

The laptop belong to my employer, so yes, it is 100% legal. I installed the latest e-licenser. I even removed it and tried to install it again. I reboot my computer. I searched internet for any explanation. But there is no answer to why it does not work. So this is why I am allergic to e-licenser. iLok works just fine. But I am stubborn and when I have time I will try to solve it. I just have to find out why this bloody thing refuse to work. :dog:

I think Scott is definitely on the right here. Copy protection is a completely legitimate topic to discuss as long as it is an integral part of software. After all copy protection stopping user from using software was the reason this thread got started in the first place. It is perfectly reasonable to discuss what works and what does not or what is user friendly and what is not. Obviously it helps if the discussion is evidence based. So concrete examples are rather a must than a no-no. This is exactly what Scott provided in this case as a proponent of a user friendly CP.

Sticking our head collectively in the sand (like in the beginning of the iLok debacle) is stupid and does not change the facts. It's often also hypocritical because it's not the dirty thieving warez kids lurking out there on the sites of dubious nature but plenty of high profile musicians, engineers and software developers too.

Reason hasn't been cracked because they use other company protection (not ilok or elicenser), that company is pretty serious and hosts hacking contest against their protection. So far their remain uncracked.

Steinberg kind of did the same with eLicenser. Afaik, any version after 6 (or 5 even?) hasn't been successfully cracked. There are warezed versions, but none of those are fully functional. Arguing that eLicenser sucks as a copy protection is pretty invalid, because, obviously, it does work.

IMO dongles are old fashioned protection. It was OK a decade ago because most of people owned one computer. Nowadays, many (if not most) of us have two (if not more) and laptops can do the job efficiently for musicians (hobbiests and professionals alike).

Some companies are still with old mentality, but I expect the dongle (and one computer restriction) to disappear in the near future as companies are abandoning it as Arturia and Xils labs for example.

Personally, I can find alternatives easily for dongle protected software, but I understand that many musicians or/and mixing engineers have a need to specific softwares that only come with a dongle.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49 and some software instruments / synths.

In pixie-dust land, these things are supposed to work and be supported. In the real world that translates to "entitlement" :hihi:

If it works as advertised, I couldn't give a rats if it's a dongle or not.

There are download links for older OS versions on the elicenser website, which also include Win 7. I suspect the version you have is looking for something else in Win 7 that's not installed there, so try the older version of elicenser.

Or, it might be failing because your system needs the Win 7 platform update....

Hi

when you hear about the various types of 'customer friendly' protection that revolve around serial/keyfile/water mark/'time bomb' (goodness knows what that last one is?!#) I do wonder why such protections are not taken up more readily by companies who rely on ILOK et al and even challenge/response.

I thought that Uhe had developed a good c/p - why wouldn't companies check it out (use it) and perhaps have greater sales to those who will not otherwise buy their products?

From what I gather companies using these systems (ILOK/eLicenser et al) can incur quite some expense, which in turn leads to inflated prices.

I wonder what causes a company to go the ILok, Pace, elicenser, c/r route? - I mean what exactly leads them to believe that they will 'loose' 'x' amount of money should their product get pirated OR, even if it is likely to get pirated in the first place...

But with Reason you get 1 hardware auth, 1 on dongle, and still one internet auth that you can log into on any computer. If you lose internet or dongle mid session the thing doesn't come crashing down like ilok and elicenser (this is down to implementation though, when SSL Duende used codemeter it still crash and burn when something happens to the dongle)

I'm actually quite ok with the auth vs ilok/elicenser, since I don't have to think about what license at where. Well until their server goes down this week anyway, which sadly PH is about as responsive about server issue is as a dead horse.

I also personally prefer u-he and even NI protection over elicenser, ilok, codemeter. But we were talking about what has been or not cracked.

iLok has it better than eL because of multiple authorizations and ability to move stuff online, unlike elicenser.
