Americans, constituting only 4.6% of the world’s population, have been consuming 80% of the global opioid supply, and 99% of the global hydrocodone supply, as well as two-thirds of the world’s illegal drugs.

The reason I sorta contested the statement that 90% of all opioid scrips are written in the US is to defend the US as not appearing like a nation of drug addicts.
Now seeing the quote above I got busy. The numbers are wrong or dubious, and the hydrocodone statement is deceptive.

My back hurts from all this research.I need a pain med. lol I'll come back later on to make my spiel.

I decided to stay out of it. Too much trouble to organize it all here, not to mention all the crap I expect to get from it.

so the assertion that the USA is a nation of prescription drug junkies goes unchallenged. And the stereotype of laziness is confirmed.

by the way, saw some headline in a paper yesterday that said Prince contracted HIV in the mid 90's, which developed in to AIDS in the last 6 months...and because he is part of the Jehovas Witness cult he refused treatment.

Can anyone who has been following this story confirm or disconfirm this as tabloid trash or unfortunate truth

WTF has laziness got to do with it? USA has large numbers of people - working poor - who need to keep working with worn out bodies or starve. It is simply a fact of life that long term manual labour tends to wear out bodies - knees, shoulders, back, hips, ankles etc.

In some other countries - eg Europe, Canada - someone in the 50s/60s/70s would retire and live on disability or pension with these sorts of health issues.
In the USA, in a comparable medical situation, you might well be forced to stay in low paid employment to get basic health benefits/afford pharmaceuticals and might need pain management to do keep going. People working two or three jobs or working excess hours driving a truck/cab/whatever is a major driver of stimulant use too. Plenty of economic drivers of drug use.

I gather from recent reports that Prince was in chronic pain from his work - which involved dancing and leaping around on stage in 4" heels. Hence the percocet. And, as a performer, I doubt he is Robinson Crusoe in that regard.

I will confirm that the source of this information comes from tabloid trash. Once in a while they are right, but not too often.

I had a little experience with hydrocodone concerning a tooth issue a while back. During this time I had used the drug coming from two different generic manufacturers. Each had different, subjectively apparent, strengths although they both were the same mg strength.
The weaker one was more long lasting, (longer AUC) and the other came and went more quickly, (shorter AUC) although with stronger sedating effects. My point here is, it seems dosing therapeutically with opiates can get out of hand pretty quickly if your not initially careful. You take your recommended dose for pain...and you throw in one more for fun.
You think one thing is going to happen and before you know it your on the floor.

I think Bluedad was referring to the AIDS rumor. Like you don't just go run a marathon and then die from AIDS the next day, there's a long progression.

sure..there's a long progression if you die of it 'naturally' ... if you happen to catch a bad flu, whilst suffering from AIDS, well yes... you can go from pretty much fine & dandy to six feet under in an unfortunately very short period of time. Especially if you are treating AIDS with prayer, as opposed to medicine.
We need to keep that in mind... presuming the story is true, they are not just saying he had AIDS...but that he had untreated AIDS.

anyway, thanks for confirming the source of this Prince-AIDS story was tabloid trash.
