I like some humor (ok, a lot of humor) with my horror. So many of the horror novels out there now are unrelentingly grim. Maybe someone can recommend a few that make you laugh before they scare you?
EDIT: Sorry, all the movie threads here prompted me to post in this forum, but I see it's OT. Could someone move it to the OT forum for me? Thanks.

I prefer laughing with the author, not at him.

Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens Rollickingly funny telling of events in the Apocalypse when someone goofs and gives the AntiChrist to the wrong couple. But there's some supremely scary moments in this novel as wellDoug Nelson wrote:I like some humor (ok, a lot of humor) with my horror. another I just thought of - Bimbos Of The Death Sun by Sharyn McCrumb. Although more of a murder mystery, it does take place at a scifi/horror/fantasy convention, and does feature one very scary individual when revealed as the murderer. And the stuff that happens at the convention is VERY funny....

If you ever come across a book by R. Chetwynd-Hayes called The Monster Club, grab it. It's insane. It blends gore and humor with undercurrents of philosophy and ponderings on social class and the relationship between eaters and the eaten - all wrapped up with a strange dreamy fairy tale childishness.
I gather Chetwynd-Hayes is a mediocre writer at best, but sometimes when mediocre writers let it all hang out they catch fire and produce something so strange and original... if Margaret Atwood or Martin Amis had written it, it would be hailed as a modern masterpiece.

Hmm... is your "funny" more of a "weird" funny, or a "hahaha" funny??
If its the former, Clive Barkers' Weaveworld and Abarat are pretty amusing - some bizzare creations in those.
If you like to laugh at people getting their bollocks chopped off with a butter knife... you can always read some of my stuff!!

"Haha" funny. Buffy, Shaun of the Dead, Reanimator, these are movies in the category, but I'm looking for books right now.
Barker is enjoyable for his offbeat imagination, but I don't find him funny. Monster Club was ok, but juvenile. American Psycho was sardonic, but again no laughs.
But thanks for the suggestions so far.

Thanks for the Robert Rankin recommendation. I'll offer back Charles Stross in return.
