but Sonimus claim theirs

carefully recreates the characteristic sound of each EQ band, and the unique personality of both the 1073's inputs: LINE and MIC.

I've never used a real Neve 1073 Hardware EQ

i'm looking for opinions from those who have.

Or at least a hardware Clone

Which one is the closest emulation, Flaws and all

I haven't used the Waves, but the Burnley, UAD mk 2, and Slate (when used in tandem with the Mic pre plugin) all sound very close to each other. Go with the Burnley.

If you use Nebula or Acqua plugin,you will think that all of them suck.

Burnley is the worst.

I only tried the Waves Scheps 73 of those three, but I found it really sweet. The EQ is very musical (i. e. you actually hear what you're doing right away) and the built in analog saturation is great to give tracks more depth, body, and warmth. Can definitely recommend this one, although then CPU hit might be lower on the Sonimus and/or IK.

The Burnley 73 is superb - and so is the UAD Neve 1073! The former has the advantage of the cheap price and the fact that you can put as many on your mixes as you desire, while the latter gives you the option (via Unison) to use it as a realtime mic preamp. If you have an Apollo, of course.

I've the Slate, Burnley, IK and the Waves. But to be honest I've never used a real Neve.

They are all pretty good. My favorite would probably be the Slate.

The Scheps is quite good, but the distortion is unusable imo. It's far too strong. Burnley is good as well (more versatile then Waves).

Personally, I'd go with something like Aqua's Pink or PSP E27 - better sounding EQs imo, and the drive is superior on the PSP.

Agreed, however it's worth mentioning that distortion and saturation are two different things in this plugin, which you can choose between

That's true... It's a shame when it's 'totally driven' that it just breaks up. And the other end is quite not enough (imo). But its EQ is pretty nice.

My initial reaction when I switched on the distortion for the first time was like: "All right, so there must have been quite a number of people during the development process actually going like: 'Wow, that's an awesome sound! We have to keep it in the final version!" True mystery to me

Just to add to my prior post, while I own the IK version, it's the odd man out compared to the Burnley, Slate, and UAD versions. The HP filter sounds nothing like the others, the drive effect is way too strong (it's hard to get the IK to stay clean), and the other curves are off too. It's good at doing its own thing, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it compared to the others.

If I didn't already have the Slate plugs, I totally would've gone with the Burnley, which I was really impressed by (except for that small, green-ish hued UI).

Im also from the nebula Camp, and i thought that Burnley sounds pretty similar to cupwise's Neve 1066 (part of his mixing filters 2) except for the high shelf and the general sound which is slightly smoother and more alive in nebula world.

But Burnleys saturation is very good to make things sit in a mix...I rarely need compression when using it. Its bettet than Slates consoles for that purpose.

Not to nitpick, I bring this up only to level the playing field in terms of comparisons, but to compare the Burnley to Slate Plugins you'd want to compare it to:

Burnley in Line mode: FG-N (with drive)
Burnley in Mic mode: FG-N (no drive) + FG-73

I believe the Neve console in VCC is a 8048, which is a different beast entirely.

Same here. Nebula, Slate and Uad. For some funny reason i like Burnley best of all. Followed by Slate. Nebula is fine but cumbersome and add latency. Different taste i guess.

I haven't used the Sonimus, but the other two work nicely side by side. The subtle differences between them are what contribute to create a bit more depth.

Not sure what people are saying about the distortion on the Schreps. I haven't used myself, but I've seen Andrew Scheps use it and it was quite subtle.

I like using these EQs with NLS as well. Not necessarily on the Neve setting, but that's certainly my common choice.
