This question struck me this morning...

Your record label asks you for your influences to put on the sleeves of releases, your website and various other things. They want you to remain consistent however, so you are to have only ten. Who would they be?

I went for (it would be different every day)...

Eric Satie
John Coltrane
Dead Prez
Bach
Roni Size
Louis Jordan
Miles Davis
Wagner
DJ Shadow
KRS-One

No more than ten, the point is it's supposed to be hard. Really interested to see what other people go for.

Move on to another record label ASAP!

I don´t get it really!
I don´t have single artist influences at all.
I just listen to all kinds of music and get inspiration.
It´s not like I care what the artist is about or even what their performing name is...

To me it´s all music and inspiration.

Oh, wow, man! This is sooo trippy that you asked that. See, like, back when I was in college in the 1970s -- dig this -- after listening to a Grateful Dead or Tomita or Zappa or Heart or Walter Carlos or Joe Walsh album side about nineteen times in a row, staring at the label on the spinning LP... the label used to ask me what my musical influences were!

My answers to the record labels have been collected in the eight-volume novel "Things That Sounded Really Profound When I Said Them But Now I Wonder What the Heck I Meant" (Utterly Random House, out of print).

This happened to me with my first record contract and I regretted ever answering the question... everything you say can and will be used against you...

Been there, done that.

I was a bit more general though.

70s Funk/Disco/Soul
80s RnB/Rock
80s Synth Pop
early 90s Belgian Techno
Drum n Bass
The Neptunes/N.E.R.D
Sade
Luscious Jackson
Kelis
Sheena Easton
Virtuoso Rock

I know it is 11. I am a rebel. PUNKS NOT DEAD!

(it would be different every day)...
It probably shouldn't be.

Er, I don't think that'd make a very attractive sleave. 'My Influences'. Nah.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.
