I did this once before and decided that as little as I talk on the phone that I would keep my shitty LG girl-phone. (I know, ironic eh? AND I DO NOT TEXT....wrap your head around that)

But now things are different. Not only does it have the worst sounding headphone jack in history (no, it's super bad) but it's super small and doesn't really do what you need to. And I really need a really good camera and vid taker (as good as possible in low light. I find myself at the gym and waiting for service "a" far more and just get sick of twiddling my thumbs.

So why don't I just go get one like a samsung 6? Because when I used friends iphones/smart phones they still seem to be horribly difficult to get around on.

Between the battery time, trying to set the screen (so it doesn't blink off immd) being TOO big (many are) and the lack of being able to navigate w/o jumping through hoops, I'm at a loss.

My eyesight is fading fast too :x

I don't know where to begin!

So, needs:

-good to excellent sounding headphone jack for listening to music and at least 32 GB of space (but would like more for vid/pics)
-EXCELLENT camera/vid for a total novice/worlds worst picture taker.
-I'd say "best battery life" but that just seems to be a ridiculous battle. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
-An OS that is easy to operate and can BLOCK all the shit that pops up. I have an ipad (not cell activated) which is cool, but it's gotten to where ads and popups are out of control for many things.
-I'd like it to be really easy to transfer/update with my win10 computers but I'm not scared of usb if that's necessary (see how old-school I am!)

I'm not opposed to any brand that I know of. iphone is cool, but it's kinda big and bulky and don't like it as much as my ipad and seems to be harder for my to read vs android for example.

Unfortunately, it will ATT because I want to keep my number and that's what I have all my other crap bundled with :x (DTV, internet, blah)

I think the most important part is, how much do you want to spend on the phone? You mentioned the Samsung S6 and the iPhone. If you're willing to spend that amount of money, i don't think there's much wrong with either of it. For integration with Windows 10, you can use Airdroid on an Android phone, which is an app you boot up your smartphone, then you open up the Airdroid website on a Windows, or anything, computer on the same wireless network, scan a QR code which is being shown on the website with the app on your phone, and voilà, it's connected, and you can exchange files, edit your contacts, even do phone calls with your computer. I don't know if something similar exists for iOS. I doubt it. If you want to afford it, i would recommend the Google Nexus 5, which should be good hardware really, and probably a bit cheaper than the Samsung S6, plus it gives a more "native" Android experience, because it doesn't have a specially made or modified launcher, or comes with dozens of comany specific apps. The quality in general should be pretty good on the Nexus phones. I haven't used one, but read and heard of it a lot.

For the "being complicated", well, i'm sure you can get used to it. I would say that those systems are in general very user friendly, and easy to get into, because touch operation feels natural for us. I can't complain about that on my Android phone at all, it's very easy and usable. iPhone is very usable too. Your call.

Btw, i really have/had an eye on a Windows Phone for my next phone. There are some issues with that though, for example the smaller app market, which means that some apps might not be available, or not as functional as some Android apps. Also, i love the Google services, and those are not available on Windows Phone. You get a Youtube app which leads you to the mobile version of the Youtube website in the browser e.g., Maps is missing, Notes is missing, Drive is missing... all stuff you have to access through the mobile website, which doesn't have all the functionality. Quite a bummer for me, so i may end up buying an Android phone next time too actually. If you like Google, there's really no alternative to an Android phone. If you like Apple, there's no alternative to an iPhone.

For the iPhone you could look at the SE. It's not as big as the iPhone 6. It might also be the last iPhone with a headphone jack if the rumours are true. If they weren't so expensive I'd have one myself. There's also plenty of nice music apps on iOS for noodling around or more serious work. Safari in iOS 9 has adblocking now and before this I was using Weblock.

I have a (cheap) Windows phone and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Windows Mobile 10 is a disaster. Everything that made Windows Phone interesting in version 8 has been removed in Microsoft's unending desire to scrap everything good they've ever managed to do. It's a poor Android imitation at this stage and while the universal apps might be helping to fill the "app gap" a little, it still feels like it's in freefall while Microsoft are putting more effort into their iOS apps.

Interesting.

I've heard mixed reviews about the iphone camera (I don't really like what I've tried to use) The LG 4G seems to have the best camera, but it's big as well

As far as price, they are all so close with a 2 year contract/use the phone it doesn't seem to matter. You have to pay one way or the other. For someone who just needs a phone (ironically the thing I need least  ) there are way cheaper routes. I seem to be stuck between 25-35 a month regardless. (I used to get this one for about 8 bucks a month, now it's as much as a really good phone

APPS? Don't really care that much. I'd like a decent FREE radio player (slacker? ) and that is about it.

@safari/os9: I have that on my ipad and it's still a mess with youtube and many other sites. Haven't been able to pin down if there is something that can be done. I don't think the SE has a very good camera. That is about as high on my list as can be.

Ok, pussy mode OFF!

I went ahead and took the bull by the horns (I hate going into public to talk about things) and got off my fat-ass and made an appointment.

Clarified things (ouch!, they are not cheap) and got the LG 5G.

Tried the samsungs. Hated them. Every time I tried to use it it just didn't work for me.

Then the iphone. Played around with the neighbors a few today and thought maybe it would be the one, but didn't want the "plus". The S is cool, but it's really expensive. (about 400 bucks more when you add up the contract)

Then I went and played with the 5G. INSTANT GRATIFICATION! :o Really responded to my needs, it does indeed have a nice camera, and is layed out different (even though apparently the same OS? ) Really good touch sensitivity for me, very well laid out, my old sim chip went in in addition to the 32GB it had (yay, don't have to reinstall my music) and is really light and feels good.

14 day return policy if I run into something un-anticipated.

---the bad news---

Though I was paying WAY too much (in recent months) for the shitty phone I had, the reason is because rip-off ATT now charges much more for a line. I was paying 7.99 and the phone was free. I could go with something much cheaper, but you still have to pay for the phone line  I don't feel like screwing around with a new provider.......call me money bags :scared:

But if this phone is as cool as it seems, it will be worth it, the one I had was garbage (pretty sure I've shown this before, get ready for a real laugh! And it's no where near this big)

I got the LGV10 for Xmas ... It has 32bit DAC when the headphones are plugged in ... I had to do some cleaning up of apps and disable things to make it more Nexus or pure Google-ish ... I got the wife an iPhone 6S+ , as much as I wanted to hate it , it's a bad assed phone too .. I'm kinda jealous in a way , but I'm not big on being locked out of doing certain things , iOS only things that is . At times I like the size of the phones and I also at times I hate the size too ... The Nexus5 was good enough size wise I hate that it broke .... Oh also the LGV10 is a tank it's durable as all get out .... Anyways hope you like you LG G5 ..... I'm finding I like.the incipio brand cases or bumpers too .

I got something called a "case mate" and I probably overpaid for it too  Really looks and feels good though. They had some clear case that looked stupid to me (just super cheesy) and one of those "old people" cases (like my dad has for his belt........yeah, an iphone on your belt :scared: ) But this is sleek and doesn't look ass.

Yeah, in this day and age there is no denying the apple ios. I've loved my ipad for a long time not, not sure what I did w/o it. But I'd HATE to use it as a portable.

So, when it says "restrict" to wifi, it will only use wifi and stop sucking the life out of my data usage?

Post

On that particular App yes . You can also go into settings and manually turn your data off when not using it . And also manually turn your wifi on and off too ...If it's a concern .

Post

Thanks!

Post

Sorry, but I have to say, other than the weird "how the f...k did that data get used so quickly" and the slightly poor battery life (which I anticipated) this is the shizzle on roids.

It's as if my life went from complicated, un-organized and boring to having brighter rainbows. I had a similar feeling with my ipad, and it shows how far this stuff has come (I hated it in the beginning, see pee wee herman ipad youtube  )

Anyways, thanks for the answers. It was just me finally taking the plunge.

I didn't own a smart phone until the 3rd time T-Mobile called me and gave me one for free , Mytouch4g HTC , little did I know my bill went up by $20 or so more for months. The next phone I get will be some unlocked phone that has dual sims slots and I'll go back to Straight Talk ... AT&T is who I'm on now . Yeah LG don't have the best battery life ... YouTube , , music streaming video , and also Facebook will eat your data up also make sure to go into settings and mark software updates for over wifi only . Also downloading mp3 will eat it up to .. I get 5gb months to share with wife a I have it warn me when I get to 2.4gb ... I never have a problem ....

Post

Well, I just find it strange that what little (messing around to see how things work) screwed it up that much.

Now, I'm paying the 3.99 a month for "slacker" and it's supposed to ditch into that vs. the free version. We'll see (but "slacker" is so awesome I'm not even sure I care! Wow, it's a terrific music app for sitting here at the computer, being at the gym, or on my ipad........just love it)

I did find out the hard way that "youtube" is a bad idea data wise for this thing

Post

WTF is this bullshit with "data usage?" ????????????!

I'm at 3gb (tomorrow is my turning date) which means I pay OVER on the next bill, and I managed my account (and turned the god damned thing off to try and help)

??????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x :x :x

Att, you suck ass! (slacker was really my only use, and that is supposed to not be a deal once you pay for the "upgrade!" :x)

:x

Sorry, kinda pissed.
