No, this is not what I mean. When people are asked something like "what artists would you list as the most significant influences to [your particular musical project]", they are not really asked what they listen to, eh?

Everyone lies.
Yes, because they're ashamed to admit that if they were stuck on a Desert Island, they'd rather have one of the same albums that the rest of the world would pick. ;)

Of course, Desert Island Discs is slightly different than top 10 influences. I think it can go without saying (though I'll say it) that none of us are actually capable of our top 10, because any given day we'd forget and/or remember any number of artists who would change that list. Here's today's list, by way of answering rather than avoiding the question as I would normally try to do. ;) (and in no particular order)-->

-Johnny Cash (one of those that people are afraid to admit is an influence now that it's a cliche already)
-Counting Crows
-Matchbox 20
-Rheostatics
-Aimee Mann
-Pearl Jam
-Neil Finn
-Wilco
-Matthew Sweet
-Spirit of the West / John Mann (I snuck in a twofer)

Move on to another record label ASAP!
At first I thought "LOL IAWTP K" but then I thought that if if some label wanted to release my weird electronic bleeps it would be nicer to to just sum up a bunch of noisy guitar bands as influence...
like
  1. NoMeansNo
  2. Shellac
  3. Primus
  4. Living Colour
  5. Tool
  6. Kyuss

To me musical influence means some music which has changed some way I think or feel about some aspect of music. My examples

Infected Mushroom - e music can be more than 4 on the floor.

Dark Chaos - Goa Buttrock - Rocks!

Jimi Hendrix - you can break the rules if you can make up your own. also, any song can be played 9 million different ways.

Beatles - Feeling, enthusiasm, and pep can transend mere boosterism and motivate people positively.

John Kay - Steppenwolf - The Pusher - distortion can be GOOD.

Buffalo Springfield - For What its worth - music can transend pop and get people to think about freedom.

Billy Idol - Reble Yell - Everybody is a punk at some point.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - It's ok to be different.

James Brown - Sex Machine - Get on the one.

Elvis - Jailhouse Rock - Its ok for white people to shake, rock and roll. Style counts more than content.

You can click on the link below to here three old ( very old ) tunes... I am working on an Ep right now so until it's ready, I won't be posting new stuff online..

adj.
Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.

And before anyone else does it I'd like to claim John Cage and Half Man Half Biscuit

Asking about musical influences does not really ask about one's current feelings / emotions, no? For instance, if a song directly influences me to try to write a similar song, this influence would remain as a fact no matter how I'd feel after a year or what type of music I'd be producing at the time. I do agree with you to an extent - musical influences surely change over time. But if you have been writing music for any lenght of time and/or if you have formed what might be called 'your sound', the influences shouldn't flutter wildly on a day to day basis.

Well, what I'm saying is this:
- what one listens to and what one's musical output is considerably influenced by are two different things
- If one produces music which is obviously derivative of a particular artist or trend, it is pure folly and somewhat pre·ten·tious to not admit that this artist or trend was a significant influence
- It is similarly pretentious to namedrop all kinds of credible artists as major sources of influence if there is nothing in the music that would serve as a link to these artists
- It's like this: an unispired and insipid rock song does not get an additional layer of depth from the artist namedropping Philip Glass as a major influence.

surely not ... it would still depend on your mood at the moment you try to write that track as to whether you were able to 'correctly' interpret the intention of your influence or not ...
visa tapani wrote:I do agree with you to an extent - musical influences surely change over time.
of course ...

why ever not ??? ...

... surely if the SAME things influence you ALL the time then you are nothing more than stuck in a rut to some extent ???

what if 'my' sound is based on the concept of continually shifting points of reference ??? ...
