Hello everyone,

So, I am considering buying serum or massive. I want to go with serum, I just have a question about a certain sound I made from a tutorial in massive. (I'm demoing both plugins by the way)

I was watching Pusher's tutorial on massive.

And I'm wondering if I can create that sound in Serum. I know you probably can, but I'm still a beginner, and I couldn't find a square wave in serum, I know there is one, but the whole list of sound waves on there have different names. Is there a lowpass 4 filter in serum? And a dimension expander in serum? I am a total beginner with this stuff, so any help would be great.

Thank you,
Porter

Square Wave is under "Basic SHapes" wavetable. Lowpass Filter with 24 dB slope is default as far as I remeber. And yes, it has "Dimension" effect. You would know that if you ever tried the demo.

Oh, sorry. I have tried the demo, I'm still a beginner to all of this. I don't know where everything is, so I apologize. Thank you though. I'll try to look for the dimension effect.

EDIT: Well, just found it. Didn't see it in the FX tab. I have to look deeper. Thank you again.

Yeah, I'd use Serum's Low 24. Massive is called Low Pass 4 and the 4 refers to 4 poles, one pole is 6dB/octave. Serum's 24 refers to 24dB/octave. So they're exactly as steep :)

You can do that exact patch in Serum (mind, the tutorial uses a saw wave, not a square), but the reverb will sound slightly different. I have attached both patches to this post (ie, Massive and Serum), you'll find them in the zip.

I must add that I use Serum and Massive for different purposes (although they certainly have similarities). But I believe Serum's strength lies in its ability to sculpt your own wavetables, Massive can't do this, it's limited to the ones included.
Massive's strenght lies in its routing, the dual filters and the insert fx, and more oscillators.
If you intend to follow a lot of tutorials, you might want to check if they mostly use one of either synths, and go with that. Just because it will be easier to translate for you to your own patches.

Other than that, you can't go wrong with both synths.

Thank you very much. I think I'm going with serum, just because in the next few months I'll go for komplete 10, and I'd rather not spend $200 on massive then another $500 on komplete. But yeah I think I can translate some massive tutorials to serum, but I don't just watch massive tutorials, so it's not the end of the world. ;)

Whoops, I thought the tutorial uses a square wave, my bad.

Thank you for the file by the way, I tried it and it sounds pretty close to the tutorial.

Thank you again

Not a problem! And yeah, Komplete's a good deal!

You may want to check the classifieds section here if you're into saving money. If you need it now, then retail is the obvious choice. By the way, I bought Serum, Massive, and Razor for about $205 total from some really cool guys here on KVR. It took a couple of weeks but you'd be surprised how often you find what you need here. Good luck!
