First sound on 'Beat It' by Michael Jackson.. that deep FMish sound.. that's Synclavier. I only know this because the promo vid for Arturia's rendition says so..

But it would be a bit unfair by Roland to demand such changes all of a sudden. Nor do such superficial changes hide in any way what it emulates, it only makes the GUI look uglier, no win for anyonesergiofrias wrote:hmmmm...Jupiter-8v had to drop the name to jup-8v, and the gui suffered a lot of changes,is my guess that that Arturia received a letter from Roland, since their original design was much more closer to the hardware...

Roland will probably release their own plugout/plugin version of the Jupiter 8. They already know how to do it (boutique).
BTW VCollection 4 users get Lab 2 for free (all the presets if the new instruments).
Schijnverbetering is what the the new gui's are all about. When it looks new it sounds better.

The famous FM one is at the start of MJ's Beat It...fluffy_little_something wrote:I know typical Fairlight sounds, but I don't know which sounds the Synclavier was famous for. I have seen the Synclavier mentioned on many record sleeves in the 80's, but who knows which sounds actually came from it

I thought Stevie Wonder has always been a heavy user of the Synclavier.
Maybe the intro sound of Superstitious?

I'm pretty sure that's a real Clavinet (well, actually two of them).zxant wrote:fluffy_little_something wrote:I know typical Fairlight sounds, but I don't know which sounds the Synclavier was famous for. "Superstition" predated the Synclav.zxant wrote:fluffy_little_something wrote:I know typical Fairlight sounds, but I don't know which sounds the Synclavier was famous for. I have seen the Synclavier mentioned on many record sleeves in the 80's, but who knows which sounds actually came from it

The "In Square Circle" album came out around the time that Stevie most likely would have been using the Synclav. (He appears in an episode of The Cosby Show about a year later as well, using it to sample human voices.) A lot of the programmed sounds on that album, which included singles like "Part Time Lover" and "Overjoyed," sound typically Synclav-ish. (He also was an early adopter of the Kurzweil digital products as well, and a Kurzweil features prominently in the "Part Time Lover" music video.) The song "I Just Called To Say I Love You," from the soundtrack to "The Woman In Red," is also from the right timeframe and sounds like it has Synclav on it along with the obvious vocoder work.

Maybe my impression is wrong, but it seems to me the Synclavier was not the most musical devices, but more of a sound effects machine. I think I would have been more of a Fairlight and Emulator kind of person - if I had had the money back thenRTGraham wrote: "Superstition" predated the Synclav.

I think the CS80V is an improvement, specifically if you use a touch surface the spacing between the sliders is going to help. Mind made up, jumping in on this upgrade. Audiodeluxe has the only discount on the upgrade out there as of now, if anyone else is thinking about it.martin_l wrote:I guess I can used to the new GUI of the CS80V, but I am not sure about the JUP-8V.mnmlfrk wrote:the new GUIs are great, but can I have my tooltips back please?
As for the tool-tips, i think the values are now displayed in the 'status line' at the bottom of the window.
