Hi

I re-installed xp on my son's PC but found that it was not a clean install - all kinds of material was left behind from its previous state!

My BIG mistake was when I chose to use NTFS - why, well as I see it the only way to clean the hard-drive would be to fdisk it (I have used this on Win98 a lot-but this is my first XP re-install experience) but fdisk will not work with NTFS.

The Hard-drive had a partition on it for system restore which is now wiped clean.

So my question is can I revert the NTFS file system on the Hard-drive back to fat32 (so I can do an FDISK), if not how can I clean the Hard-drive to make sure I get a clean install as the winxp install does not appear to be doing the required clean-up!

I posted this at Musicxp.net as well.

Going out now so hopefully in 8 hours there will be some usefull advice!

Help appreciated.

Deleting the partition you want to install on and then reformatting that patition should make a clean install possible.

if you can wipe the partition youll have a clean install

But surely the installers asks you if you want to format the disk?

And yeah, you can fiddle with making / removing partitions as well, as stated in the post below.

You don't need to use fdisk or any additional program to wipe a harddisk clean. The XP installation program will do just fine. When you install XP, you can choose to remove all partitions from the disk, and then make a clean new one to install XP on. Not rocketscience at all, just read every screen and you should do fine.

Depends what version of FDisk you're using. It seems they removed Fdisk from XP, but if you have a slightly 'newer' Windows OS, it should recognize NTFS as NTFS. If you had something like Windows 95's FDisk or something even older, it would say Non_dos (it said that for Linux partitions for example) I don't remember is specifically preventing you from removing it though, but then again, I havne't tried to remove one in that method for a LONG time.

but as Rune said, do it during install instead.

If you would like to work in a more comfortable way, use this. It remembers NTFS easily.

Have you tried the non-QuickFormat way?

XP install issue.
